Hi

After just about surviving my last solo epic adventure across the USA a couple of years ago I have been given a two week pass from OC home command to go back and do the bits that i missed. After the last disaster shipping my own bike there and having to smuggle it back out of the USA to get it home, i feel that hiring locally would be a prudent decision this time around. The obvious choice is Eagle rider as they seem to have that whole hire and ride scene sewn up but “IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE?” Any recommendations for a company that offers a similar package?

I’m curious? What were the issues? The “darlings” at JFK didn’t stamp my import documents….the guys at the shipping office on the west coast just smiled….disappeared to the back office….where they apparently have a JFK stamp…. Top blokes…

What did I miss? How does one smuggle a bike home?
Air Canada was supposed to fly my bike into JFK but decided to take it to Toronto instead. The helpful shipping agent in New York thought it would be quicker if they just popped it on a truck and bring it into america by road. That’s where the problem started as the dumb arsed driver “FORGOT” to stop at border customs. When i turned up at JFK to get my documents stamped they disclosed that as they had never seen the bike they couldn’t complete the import forms. At this point my bike was now an illegal import. When i got to LA six weeks later and tried to “Export” the bike home I couldn’t as the bike did not legally exist in the USA. That’s when the smuggling started. A thousand dollars in a brown envelope, a friendly customs guy in a port on the east coast, six months sat on a dock, four ships, eight ports later and i finally got my bike home.

I rented a GSA 1200 from an independent guy in Salt Lake City a few years back to do a tour of Utah. He had a fleet of about a dozen bikes of different makes. He was great, the bikes were great, and the price was very cheap compared to eagle rider. He was based in north Salt Lake City. Can’t remember the name but I doubt there is more than one in that location

Isn’t there a company called Orange and Black over there Steve?
I’m amazed you got you’re bike back….lol

I’m looking for a company that supplies bikes and organised tours in New England. Orange and Black came up with a UK telephone number which rang a bell as I’ve seen them at bikes shows here.

They are UK based good outfit so give David Grist a call there. They will be very helpful I'm sure.

Unfortunately, AFAIK Eagle rider are the only option if you want to rent one way cross country.
Motoquest do one way rentals. Only West Coast. locations in Anchorage, Portland Oregon, San Fran and LA.
There are other local operators but most don't do one way.
Hertz apparently rent MC now and may do one way.
No idea how good any are.
Cycle BC in Vancouver have treated me well. Recommended but again not one way unless you want to go to Victoria.

I hired an RT and rode it from San Francisco to Newark over about three weeks. I hired from Orange & Black, but it came from Eagle Rider. It wasn’t cheap but at the time shipping was in post Covid turmoil so there was no guarantee my bike would end up in San Francisco. Orange & Black were good to deal with, Eagle Rider were a shower of shit. The bike was good, I took my own SatNav plugged into the power outlet and on a RAM mount we took BMW luggage liners for the panniers and a BMW soft bag.
