After my recent Assen trip, I thought I'd give the bike a good clean to get all the Dutch wildlife off.

Noticed that the paint was starting to bubble up where the cylinder head meets the engine block on the clutch side.

Popped into Cotswold BMW. The salesman said there is definitely an issue, and I need to start a claim with BMW to get an engine swap.

I know there have been a few issues with this type of claim, but has anyone exchanged for a new bike with a nice healthy discount from BMW instead of having the engine swapped out ?

Yep, a few have.:thumb

BMW will work a deal out for you, if that's the route you want to go down.

Any idea how much it costs BMW to do a engine swap ?

New engine and labour must be a few grand, so this may be my bargaining leverage...................... Now the question.............. What do I go for ?

If you were to buy the engine from BMW you can expect to pay £7400 'ish' not fitted

Regarding exchange of bike, depends on age - miles - what relationship you have with the dealer as to how good of a deal it will be.

This is how your bike will look .

They will remove 30 bolts and when rebuilt they'll be one left over

Yep, had the same with mine. BMW but a new engine in - no questions asked, now have a engine which doesn't suffer from clutch drag....or bubbles on cylinder block.

To the people who have gone through this process.

How long did it take for BMW to respond ?........ I popped into the dealers, and he hasn't had a answer off BMW yet. And I'm not the only one, as there are two gs's with corrosion issues with them. (Anyone on here?).

BMW usually respond quickly, I found the dealers were a little less pro-active!

Maybe the cost to them of doing the warranty work is somewhat off putting.

Engine / gearbox replacement

I was told £5.5k plus labour, it took 2 hours for a decision though mine had 3rd gear selection issues & I copied the UK service / spares director in on the correspondence which helped???

Mine took 2 weeks to respond, so guess that's the other end of the spectrum! Warranty invoice was about £7k, but that included rear swing arm too, so glad that was covered.

Finally BMW have got back to me about the corrosion issue.

I mentioned that I would be interested if I could get some money towards another bike instead of going for the engine swap.

They have offered £2K towards another BMW, even if I go for a used one............ Trouble is, I test rode a Honda Crosstourer last Saturday, and It's a peach of a ride with the DCT gearbox.

Decisions decisions......................

Just been in to see my local dealer, and he's done a cracking deal for me to ride away with a three thousand mile, 15 plate, Lowered, Olive green Adventure TE, with Proshift, and keyless ignition.

Well happy ! !
