Heshed down to BTBR's Yesterday and had some spots fitted.
After a a couple of email's i decided to go with the FF50's and the micro DE's on a Migsel bar.
I was a bit unsure which lights to go for but as i don't comute on the bike and have'nt ridden that much in the dark I couldn't justify the extra for the PIAA 510's.
On the way home the difference was immediately obvious even in daylight. The micro DE's are fantastic and give you loads more road presence, traffic seemed to move over much quicker and this was really the main reason i went for the mod.
As dusk set in (was a three hour ride home) the the improvement over the stock lights was staggering even on dipped beam. Of course there were a couple of muppets flashing me thinking because there were two spots lit up i must be on main beam. I ignored two but on the last stretch before home as it had just got fully dark some one stuck main beam on and left it on:spitfire
On went the FF50's for the first time in the dark and night became day, the inside of oncoming muppets car was illuminated as was the shocked expression on his face :D
I can't recomend this upgrade enough. The standard Hella set-up is as much light as i'll need and is brilliant value for money.
Alan's attention to detail is excellent and i can't imagine where else you would get such a professional service in a friendly atmosphere where you are constantly plied with tea, butties and cakes :thumb
A big thanks to Allan and his wife :bow

For the DEs, you will need the H3 PIAA Extreme White bulbs, rated at 55w, but gives out the light ouput of a 110w bulb.

BUT, make sure that you buy the PowerSport range of bulbs, these have a thicker filament to withstand the vibrations.

Cost...not cheap, about £30 EACH!

IMHO, worth the money, makes non HID lights look like HID, thats how bright they become.

I think that Nippy Norman sells them?

Thanks BTBR, I will try the standard DE setup first, hopefully that will be an improvement over the OE situation, then I suppose I will spend some more money on the bulbs regardless :D

With these bulbs would you still need the FF50's?

The DE's are best used with dipped beam.

The FF50 driving lights are ONLY to be used with main beam. Then to add more confusion to, the FF50's are H7 bulbs.

Even more confusion.......both the OE lights are H1 bulbs.

Makes carrying spare bulbs a feckin' nightmare, to say the least!

So it all depends of how much you want extra light on main beam really?

In the summer months, I used to have only the DEs fitted, mainly used as running lights to be honest.

At least UR doing it the correct way, some people add extra lights to the main beam and ignore the dipped beam set up.

So if you stop and think about this for a minute, you then go from four lights on main bean (OE dip, OE main + two FF50's) to one OE light on dip......how good do you think that is then.

I'll leave you to ponder and dream about PIAA H1, H3 & H7 bulbs then. :thumb

Oh bugger! I suppose that means I will have to find somewhere to fit another 12v relay for some FF50's ! Ive only just reassembled the thing from the autoswitch installation :doh

Thanks for the info though :)

Back of the speedo unit.

In fact, the same place that BMW fit it if you are daft enough to buy thier overpriced, dumb looking, non practical, poor performing, fill up with water, over rated fog ( :spitfire ) lights.

You may gather from the above that I do not rate them to much??????

:beerjug:thanks for the info they seem to be the muts nuts how do i contact BTBR?:bounce1

excuse my ignorance but what are FF50's and micro DE's and before anyone says i know they are lights but what is the difference:thedummy

They are different types of Hella lamps. Micro De FOG lamps to work with dip beam FF50 driving lamps to use with main beam. have a look here for the comparison of driving lamps http://www.hella.com/produktion/Hel...amps/Light_tunnel/Hal_driving/Hal_driving.jsp

Fogs are here:- http://www.hella.com/produktion/Hel...iliary_Lamps/Light_tunnel/Hal_fog/Hal_fog.jsp

Xenons here:- http://www.hella.com/produktion/Hel...amps/Light_tunnel/Xen_driving/Xen_driving.jsp

The Micro DE fogs give a wide pattern and have a sharp cutoff. The FF50's give good range and spread to compliment the main beam. If you fit high performance bulbs the lighting is further enhanced.

Alan

Im chuffed to bits with your DE and FF50 light setup you fitted to my 1150 gs earlier in the year What a difference Scary I can see where im going at night

PIAA bulbs now you are talking I presume from your earlier thread they will fit my DE,s without any wiring overloading problems.

Only downside if you can call it that is I am effectively culling the night flying insect population of Mid Hants

Have to smile with teeth closed when the visors up :blast

HID them for full effect!!!!

Fancy bulbs are ok, but for a little bit more I would HID them :thumb

In term of the life expectancy, HID wins everytime from a cost verses life point of view. Also while the are alive, they will blow the piaa bulbs into the weeds.
