I'm aware this has been covered a lot of times so I'm sorry if it annoys anyone by starting another post about it.
My 1150gs has a loud rattling noise after the engine has warmed up. I've ordered a new cam chain tensioner which I believe only cures the start up noise so won't fix my noise. I've checked my valve clearances today and they are fine. I know it could be the throttle bodies but is there anything else it might be?
I read this on another forum 'Some boxers may accumulate carbon especially if ridden at low speeds. A long ride (50 miles +) at highway speeds will clean up the carbon and quiet the engine' is this true?

I think you'll find that they're noisy when hot as well if the tensioner isn't upgraded. Mine became nice and quiet when I fitted it but mine only got noisy when hot, start up was always fine.

Well I didn't know that. I just thought it was the initial start up noise it cured. Fingers crossed that when I change the tensioner the noise drops a bit.

For a15min job the reward is great :-)

Can chain tensioner noise is mainly at start up cos the oil drains out of the left one when not running and takes a short time to refill when started - at least that's how I understood it. Did mine and it cured the horrible noise at start. Apart from the general noise of these engines, the cam followers sometime wear badly and make bad noise ... see Smudgers recent post on that. That carbon on cylinder heads sounds like internet nonsense. A 'long ride' is 50+miles? Don't think that's going to shift carbon off the cylinder head!!!

Cam followers? I don't like the sound of that much. I'll have to try and find that post.
Yeah I did think it sounded pretty unlikely, but not exactly being an expert in these things I thought I'd put it out there.

Hopefully will be something simple/cheap to fix, but the cam follower problem has featured on forum before. Doesn't seem to be too difficult to fix. Sumdger's post here

Depends on the severity of the knocking, could be Cam chain guide
Or

Here you go - Posted this before when others have asked about a similar noise , and they've found the same wear - try a search for camshaft wear. :thumb2

I've also had three other bikes in the workshop since with the same wear
The strange thing is the cams on other side of the engine have been perfect.

Knocking noise from the R/H side - R1100 50K miles.

Cause = Worn cams, cam followers, cam/rocker holder and rocker arms.

The cylinder head after all the rocker gear and camshaft has been removed

Cam/rocker holder.

Cam and cam followers.

Camshaft.

Cam followers in the holder.
