Any suggestions as to which free anti-virus is currently best for Windows. I'm currently running Avast on the desktop alongside an obsolete ZoneAlarm for a firewall, and the combination is dog-slow to start up. Please don't suggest Linux because it doesn't run anything I currently use and I've no wish to buy an expensive fashion statement named after a gentleman's overcoat.

You're going to get 20 different opinions..................

Start with Windows Security Essentials, and see what you think of it.

I use Bulldog - only because it was recommended by someone more IT-literate than me and it works on up to 5 computers so the kids have it on their laptops.

I have no idea if it's better or worse than anything else but I do know I've never had a virus on my computer since I've had it on.

Which version of Windows? If it's win 7 or above then just use Windows firewall and kick zone alarm into touch. For av try Microsoft security essentials as above. That might be enough to speed you up. Avoid like the plague any all in one Internet security products if you have a lower specked machine as it will grind to a halt.
If your still on XP then think about a new machine sooner rather than later as your options for XP are going to diminish now it is end of life.

To help clear up some old files that you my have accumulated over time download a free program called CCcleaner.

It will delete all the old files and also show you what starts up when you launch windows, you could have more programs than needed all starting at the same time which will slow you down.

Lastly it will also scan and fix any registry issue you have.

I use this at least once a month. It will shock you to see the amount of files you could get rid of and increase your hard drive space. I once ran it on a friends pc and cleared up 3GB worth of crap from over the years!

See my signature.

Had the free version on for around five years now. No problems, and I wouldn't know it's there. That would be because it mostly isn't.
