OK so I have only had it since end of November and due to a shortstay in hospital it has only done 200miles (shame on me) but when I went to start it last Sunday it was almost dead.

One week and BMW trickle charger (no joy) followed by Optimiser for 48hrs later its slightly less than dead but still won't start. My pal rode his last at same time as me (but he doesn't have an autocom wired up) and his was just fine and dandy (NB bought same day as mine).

Any similar experiences out there (and yes in future it will always be on the trickle charge but I've never had this problem before on a beemer)??

Cheers.

Exactly the same problem on a 1150 GS. Two days on an Optimizer and still zilch!!!!

Modern, maintenance free batteries seem to hate being completely discharged. Just had to have a new ST1300 unit changed under warranty, due to continual discharging. The battery on my 12GS has been fine.

noticed similar , not flat yet, bike new in november ,2000 miles battery getting worse evry time bike starts. garaged overnight.no electrical extras fitted?.almost like alternator not man enough for the job? a lot of my trips are 10-25 miles long which perhaps means that the engine not running long enough to put full charge back after starting?

This should be more than enough distance to recharge the battery. I travel 2 miles each way to work 5 days a week ( I know, I'm a lazy git )and it starts with no problems regardless of weather. Had only covered 2000 miles on my 1200 GS when the alternator packed in completely. Not very amused but very impressed by my local dealer. Get the voltage checked, perhaps the battery's not getting enough charge.

9k miles to date running in all weathers doing 50miles a day 4 days a week. No battery problems at all.

Currently I'm running with a BMW heated vest, autocom, heated grips, GPS and obviously the lights are on, so I'm sure the alternator power is sufficient.

Note I do not have a current-draining alarm fitted.

Conversely I do have an alarm and I've left my bike for a week without any battery problems.

There was a theory that some 12s had a problem where some of the electronics were not correctly going "to sleep" when the ignition is off, thus draining the battery too quickly. This is unsubstantiated, but it might be worth a mention to the dealer just in case, as it's the sort of thing that would probably be fixed by a software upgrade.

press CTRL + ALT + DEL!

I'm sure there was a similar issue that occurred to a few US based riders where the alternator was faulty, and wasn't pushing charge into the battery. It could also be a software issue as Mouse has previously mentioned
