Any experience with enamel paint?

I have reported here recently that the paint on my oil sump its flicking off. So far just on one spot.

I would like to fix it by myself.
As I don't have experience with the coating, I would like to exploid knowledge of others :).

Can anyone recommend a good technique + brand of enamel paint for an easy and good repair? I was hoping to do this while the oil sump is still on the bike.
Is is necessary to use a primer?
What it the best way how to pretreat the surface?

imho any work ive carried out on mine ive always used acid etch primer on bare metal and then wurth silver alloy wheel spray to match the colour of my bike and it seams to have proformed well to ,water , salt etc
 
Used the above method to good effect aswell but also the Halfords engine black worked great on black Triumph tiger engine :thumb
 
Patio/stone cleaner for the 'acid treatment' of getting bear metal.

I'd recommend PJ1 Fast black (260degrees) rather than enamel.

Got to be the Fast Black PJ1. I've used Gloss and Satin and the finish is superb if you do the prep. work first.

I was hoping to do this while the oil sump is still on the bike. Vaclav

I don't think you'll do this to any decent standard whilst the sump is still on the bike. Ideally this will need degreasing/sand blasting, then priming before painting. When NOG fitted a new sump, the whole job took about 45 mins. Although I got the sump fitted as a 'goodwill' warranty job, I don't think it's too expensive a part.

It might not be to expensive to replace, but as the paint flick area is quite small, I was thinking to take the easiest action at the moment. Basically what I aim to do is something to stop the spreading and preventing corosion of the naked bit.

I case it would continue to spread and/or get worse, I would consider replacing the oilsump for new one.
