Looks like I'm going to lose the garage where I keep my 1200gs and, as it won't come through the front gate where I live, I'm thinking of selling it and getting a narrower bike. I've got the measurements for the 650gs and it might just wriggle through. I was wondering if any of you guys were in the area over the next few days so I could see for sure if it will. Great country for biking round here - but you probably already know that.

Thanks
Jane

Not round that way but...

I have a similar problem getting mine into my garden. Post to post the clearance is 84 cm / 33 inches. Stock handlebars and barkbusters, which add 10mm each side. Entry is executed by putting one handlebar through first and a bit of a wiggle to get the other through. The posts either side are 4 inches square.

Best,

Gate posts

Thanks, Smythson. The gap between open gate and post here is 30.5 inches, so perhaps a bit more wiggling will do it. The dealers in Cardiff are the closest ones to me so I'll see if I can have one as a day long test ride.

I wonder how much it would cost you in depreciation to sell your beloved 1200...And how much it would cost to put another gate on the fence so that the two gates side by side open up like the old wild western saloon doors...

Sadly ...

... the house we live in is grade 2 listed, and that includes the front gate and railings, so I can't make any alterations.

I'm really not looking forward to selling the 1200 - I don't get to ride it very often but it puts a big smile on my face when I do.

Do you think that the council will know if you put a couple of little hinges on the railings so that a section of railings swings inwards ?
OR
a couple of hinges at the bottom of the pillars that hold the gate, so that the gate folds down on the ground and you ride over the gate...
OR
make a little ramp like this ^ so that the bottom half of the bike goes through the gate and the wider top half goes over the top of the gate posts..

I would look at every possibilities before selling a bike....Tosh

The ramp's definitely a possibility. Changes to the gate or pillars they'd definitely notice - not only is it grade 2 listed, but we're in the conservation area of St Davids and the way you breathe is monitored!
