get a stand with a built in sponge though.

the shape of the tip helps a lot too

i don't like round tips going into a point.... I find they take longer to heat a soldered joint up i find this sort of tip covers most situations

I'm more a 439 or 440 man myself, but yea - dart type tips suck...

owt will do , use good flux and decent solder , any average iron on the market will solder automotive wire, i prefer usin me gas torch , because of convenience , doesnt have to be connected to the mains , and can be used outdoors or int garage, where ye bike is usualy kept..

An old saying applies here

How do you get to Carnegie hall?

sorry about this clip it's American and they can't pronounce words properly

Sod-er instead of solder

Also he has a large tiped soldering iron which is fine for the wire... but not so good for smaller items... also don't forget if you're using heat shrink to slip it on the cable first and keep it away from the soldering area till it cooled down a bit :rob

i should say he's not the most professional at it without the piece of damp sponge that most people use to clean the iron... but it's more like the real world

I've been soldering for 40 years man and boy - I find it quite easy now :)

Just make sure you use 'full-fat' Pb/Sn solder, none of this new fangled Pb free girly low fat stuff!

Just back in with gas torch and extra bits ,plus sod er. Thanks for the help .. What do Pb/Sn mean to us lesser minded folk .

Pb =Lead; Sn =Tin

Wire Solder

Wire solder comes in various combinations of 70Sn/30Pb, 60Sn/40Pb, or 63Sn/37Pb; the lowest meltiing point of a Pb-Sn mixture is when they are mixed in a ratio of 63Sn/37Pb.
