Coming to live in eastern Malaysia and need some info on bikes and importation, on the ground info rather than stuff on websites.

Anyone able to help? Any part of Malaysia will help. I know we have Dean in KL but I cannot contact him directly.

Looking for actual taxes charged for bike importation information to be precise.!

Thanks, Nick

That is correct. What a lot of bikers do is import parts and gear from the Singapore.
Are you planning on bringing the bike there for a good while? If I'm not mistaken, only diplomats with special plates are exempt from any taxes.
Motorcycles over 499cc's are considered a luxury item therefore taxed as much as 150% of it's value.Brand new R12GS apprx 18K Sterling = Malaysian Ringgit 96K.

Drop me a PM on what info you need and I can try ask around. Also check out www.msportbike.com

Hi Nick,

Ash passed on your email address so I have emailed you, but basically in order to give you info. I need to know what you will be doing in malaysia and therefore type of visa etc.

Bike import can be done but depends on you status here. Taxes and duties are hi but again certain visas are exempt for the import of 1 vehicle.

Big bikes are available here, imported bike are expensive but have good resale value, and the KLR650 has just gone into production locally so can be bought new for 37k ringgit about 7k pound at the moment new GS 1200 are nor over 110k ringgit whick is around 20k pound. secound hand 1100s and 1150s are available in Malaysia.

Anyway drop me a mail and I'll answer question you have, or find out for you, will you be based in KL?

Dean

Hi Nick,

just some info. for the other tossers looking in:

when bringing a bike into Malaysia unless tax examption is given. you will need to pay 30% excise duty and 30% import duty on bikes over 800cc.
for bikes purchased new in Malaysia a 10% Sales tax is also levied on new vehicles.

Malaysia has been slowly reducing import duties to come in line with trade agreements, now they are zero on ASEAN made vehicles, however to protect Proton they have increase excise tax on imports, at least from outside of asian.

The process to go through is below:-

1.A letter of application addressed to the Ministry Of International Trade and Industry (MITI) for the importing of a car from your home country to Malaysia for personal use.
2. A JK69 form must be purchased MITI and duly completed.
3. Documentation indicating proof of ownership. Typically this will be a purchase receipt or transfer of ownership/letter from the previous owner if the car was purchased second-hand.
4. The original and photocopied registration.
5. The cars original insurance documents and/or a letter from the insurance company.
6. Your work permit and letter of contract from your employer in Malaysia.
7. A photocopy of your passport.

Frankly if you are planing to come for many years, it may be worth the hassle, if you are here only for a couple of years, I'd just buy a local bike. there is a fair choice here. (less of a choice in East malaysia though, but still plenty of big traillies).

Nick,
If you are heading to Malaysia under the "Malaysia My Second Home" Program, you get to import a vehicle tax free among other incentives.

As what Dean says, if you are an expat on assignment for 2-3 years, can do without the hassle of the temporary import etc, you don't get the tax money back and may have restrictions if you want to sell locally if documents are not in place at time of sale.

Best bet for the short term is to buy locally and sell when you move.

Cheers, Hatta
