Any suggestions on where to stop in Saumur

On our sojourn into France and Spain I fancy stopping in Saumur on the return leg as I hear it is a lovely place and I want to visit the tank museum. I have done a forum search and even though Saumur gets mentioned a lot in reports there are no suggestions on hotels/b&bs to stop in.

So, any ideas please

We stayed there a few years ago in a lovely little B&B not that far from the city. Rates were very reasonable too. City hotels can cost twice as much so if you don't mind staying in the quiet countryside then this is highly recommended.

Stayed here once, very nice, but I wouldn't advise paying with your own money though.

Good wine tasing in Chinon. Couly-Dutheil is the best game in town, Clos de l'Echo one of the best reds in the Loire.

The Logis hotel on the quay is basic but OK for an overnight stop.

This one is smarter, but a bit of a schlep back into town, having it's own pool.

We have used both, either on jaunts or when near to Le Mans for the 24 hour race.



Touristy type restaurants / bars on the main square by the cathedral. Also check out a reasonable list of other restaurants on the various websites.

It's on the island in the river so a bit of a walk into town but has a large secure garage
