My Epson Colour stylus has finally died a death, so its time for a new printer.
can anybody recommend a sensible 'home' printer to me. Used for letters, kid's homework, photos etc. Usual stuff I imagine.

Wots the budget?

Picked up a HP Photosmart C7180 All in one £340:eek: the wifes in to Dig photo stuff its the Dogs b#####

Had HP printers, done that, wouldn't bother ever again they were rubbish imo. On top of that, the software was not only true bloatware, it actually caused conflicts with other software progs and some media players.

Best one of the 5 I've had now is a Canon IP 4300 for @ £65. Brilliant photos, very economical with the cartridges and reasonably priced alternatives.

How often do you use the colour?

I find that for general printing a mono laser printer is best. Fine for printing web pages that the kids want for coursework, letters and most stuff that kids hand in at school.

If you do print photos then possibly get a good quality photo printer for "best".

This may be more expensive initially, in capital cost, but will probably work out a lot cheaper in the long run as your consumable costs will be much lower.

I've got an older version of this Samsung one. Bought in 2002, still going strong. Did all my printing for a degree course. Only on the 2nd toner cartridge (two came with the package but they are refillable very cheaply anyway).

Pretty much what Wessie said..

I use a mono laser at home (don't print much out) as it's cheap and you don't get problems with ink cartridges drying up...

Colour lasers are also probably worth a look as the prices have really started to come down, there's a few choices in the sub £200 range..

Only if A3 or photo printing was a significant driver would I now buy a colour inkjet printer as the running costs are offensive in the extreme. Inkjet ink is the most expensive commodity to buy there is (price per volume content).

The colour laser market price has dropped significantly now to make them a viable choice for the home user.

So if colour inkjet is the way you want to go then the Canon Pixma iP5300 would be seeing my hard earned.

But actually I'd far rather recommend a colour laser like the HP Colour Laserjet 2605

I've had a good few HP lasers, and they've all done well. Costco were selling a networked colour HP laser jet for well under £200 for the last couple of months.

Toner and drum aren't cheap, but unless you let the kids print solid colour pics a lot they last ok.

I'll be going there next week and will get the model number and exact price if you want, if it interests you I'll pick one up for you for the Max AGM.

Epson or HP for me

I find they Plug + Play pretty well. I have an Epson CX6400 beside me now. Handy tool. Printer, Photocopier, Scanner. So simple a kid can use it.

Little HP Deskjet 460handy for taking places.

USB connectors on both obviously makes things easy peasy.

can laser produce photos?

Yes. I worked for Xerox up until 2002 when the ****ers took the factory to Hungary.

At the time they had some excellent colour laser printers. We used them for printing photos all of the time at work and I still have some pretty good prints that were scanned & enlarged using the Xerox hardware.

Top of the range inkjet are probably best quality.

I suggest you take some digital images on a memory stick or SD card to a branch of PCWorld or similar and ask them to print out a few familiar photos on a demo machine.

Then come home and source the printer on the internet for less money...

I run an ICT department - over the years we have had loads of different printers - for inkjets in general HP last the best but the cartridges are expensive and non-genuine cartridges can be very variable in quality, often not working at all - now only use epson inkjets, currently still using many c66s, cx3650s and d68s, do not last as well as hps or canons but can get cartridges much cheaper (from £1.95 each) and have never had a problem with any of them. Photo quality of d68s is pretty good up toa4. Would always look at cost of replacement cartridges before buying a printer as they do vary enormously, especially if you can only get genuine replacements.
