I'm going to be in Austria for about 5 days at the end of June and beginning of July. This is my first time with the bike although I have been before with a car. I'll be based in the Lechtal but intend going to Timmelsjoch and Grossglockner Pass as well as heading back to Rheinland Pfalz via Berchtesgaden. Anyone know these area having ridden there before got any good tips. Are they worth going to?

Cheers

Ronnie

Both passes are worth the toll IMHO.

The village, Heiligenblut, at the southern end of the Grossglockner toll road was a pleasant place to stay for a couple of nights. Take the short detour from the Grossglockner pass to view the glacier.

Another road worth riding is the B99. Radstadt to Spittal. It goes over a very nice pass then runs parallel to the A10 motorway. This is quite an impressive site, built on stilts and clinging to the side of the valley. When you are on the A10 you have no idea of the civil engineering beneath you. The A10 uses tunnels whilst you go over the top on the B99.

I like Austria. The people seemed very friendly. We were in Heiligenblut during the summer. Many of the people in the bars were local families enjoying their summer off season. You wouldn't see them in the winter as they would be working in the ski resorts.

The Austrian police are keen though. They like their laser traps and on the spot fines. One of my group, on a Speed Triple, decided to give it some beans on the equivalent of an A road and was flagged down and fined.

Had a fantastic holiday there last year, but went a month earlier. Consequently the Timmeljoch was closed at the top (got up to over 8000 feet by ignoring the road closed signs, and we followed a gritter up the Grossglockner as it was snowing! The Italian Dolomites are well worth a day or two whilst you're in the area - the roads around Cortina D'Ampezza are fantastic.

Regards,

Charles
