Problem isn't really a problem for the original purchaser in the first 2 years or for however long they keep the bike with an extended warranty.
The problem lies with the poor sod who buys the bike used, and like most of us nearly bankrupts themselves buying the best/newest bike available with the intention of making it a keeper.
You are then faced say 12 months down the line with a self destructed gearbox and a massive bill, I've been there on a 5 year old r1150gs that needed in the end a new final drive unit. Luckily I got mine cheap from a firm building trikes, but had it not been available the bke would have been gone .
Lets face the fact that for 90% plus of us bikes are a hobby or toy and in comparison to cars bikes get very little use and we shouldn't encounter these faults if the so called development work was done properly in the first place
