Anyone got an 1988 R100 GS drive shaft lying about?

Off to a pretty poor start on our trip I'm afraid.

The drive shaft started vibrating in Paris yesterday.
Managed to ride back to the Tunnel.
Crossed back to the UK...drive shaft disintergrated with much rending of metal noises ten miles from the tunnel on the way back to Essex.

Had to use the breakdown insurance clause on our policy.

Now pulling shaft off, already found a ton of roller pins and scrunched metal.

Now looking for a new drive shaft.
Will be contacting motobins and motorworks asap...but just thought I'd ask if anyone here has a driveshaft they'd care to sell.

Shame...we were going to head down to Florac for the French ADV Rider meet up.

Ah well, lucky we got back to the UK where we can work on it in Maverick's garage.

Cheers: Jaq.

shit - thats a bummer mate

hope you get sorted

maybe st eptoe can sort you out ?

Hi mate

Yeah not good.
But at least it lasted long enough to get us back to the UK.
Phoned m/works...no re-cond's in stock.
Will have to send mine to them if I want mine reconditioned, 10 days they reckon, turn-around time.

M/bins dont do them.
BMW have them new for just under 400 quid. (Fark)

Will check with the German mob now, thanks for that Armstrong.

Bugger bugger bugger

Right just got home from work and we took the bevel drive and swing arm off.

The shaft is pretty much FUBAR and can't be reconditioned. Is there anyone on here that have a spare shaft about in the shed to get Jaq & Lin on the road again?

Motoworks don't have stock and only do semi buggered shafts exchanges for recon units. They might be able to find a new one but if possible we would obviously like to keep cost down and get them back on the road ASAP.

Some pics attached of the drive shaft....ssssss

If you can contact me or Jaq on pm please :beerjug:

Last night I sent PMs to Maverick and Jaqhama offering a serviceable used shaft, with a small amount of play, for them to use as a swap for a re-conditioned unit.

I've not had a response :nenau.

If anyone knows them . . . . get them to check their mail :thumb

I'll not be back on until this evening.

Bob.

Logged in here this morning and found your PM Bob.
Have sent you a PM in reply.

Also had a PM from another member, Two Wheels and replied to his PM also.
We were a tad busy last night as Mav is flying to Ireland for a wedding and we were still working on the bike and sorting luggage and flight details for Mav until well past midnight.

Accepted Voyager's generous offer of a shaft to use as a replacement or exchange unit for ours.

The help and generosity of you all is wonderful.
Riders helping riders...a constant in a world that seems to be more going in the opposite direction.

Thanks to everyone for their best wishes and help.

Now bugger off before I start getting all soppy about it. :thumb

Cheers: Jaq and Lin.

Jaqhama....

If that Avatar is a picture of yourself, then I'm not surprised your shaft went bad.....:augie

Hope you get it sorted and have a great trip.

Ah, the joys of buying a bike, sight unseen.

The bike is in great condition.
Recently serviced, well cared for.

There was no sign that anything was wrong with the drive shaft when we bought it.
And Maverick knows his Boxer's, he has a PD in South Africa. He inspected it closely before we paid for it. Everything is in fine working order.
He and I both agree that it was just bad luck.
Some shafts last for many more miles, some don't even last as long.
The paralever has always been iffy...not as rock solid reliable as the dual shock or monolever models.
I'm totally sure that the chap we bought it from had no idea that the shaft was on it's last legs.
These things happen, nothing you can do about it.
Just shrug, get it fixed and soldier on.

Hi Bob,

Many thanks for your help mate and hope to meet up at some stage and buy the beers :beerjug: The shaft arrived on Saturday and Jaq has taken it to an engineering shop today to get new bearings sorted just for peace of mind.

Will give an update once we have the beemer back on the road again :thumb2

Cheers
Dirk
