Hello beemer riders.
I'm a new member and I'm planning to buy a motorbike.Searching at what meets my requirements (talking about high requirements..) I concluded to the GS1200R.Searching even more specifically about this bike I found out some technical issues ,especially electrolical and CAN BUS problems(I'm mostly concerned about those), that came up mostly due to the newly applied high technology that this bike carries. Most of the problems appear to be solved with the 06 model,so I would apreciate it if are an owner of that model and you give me an idea of any technological issues that may have came up with your bike.
I know that 2006 model hasn't proved itself yet, and I surely know that people post at forums mostly when they are unhappy about the bike. So, this magnyfies the problems. But I'd like to have an idea on that.
Hope to be in your club soon.
Congratulations for your choice. No limits anymore for you! :thumb

Hi Vagabond. As far as I can recall, I haven't seen anyone mention a single technical failure with the CAN-BUS system, so it looks to be very solid.

And yes, you're correct about the serious magnification effect that the internet can give.

I had an '04 before moving on to the '06. The '04 had no issues at all and the '06 is identifyably improved with a different side-stand and centre-stand. I suspect though that there are quite a few non-visible build improvements that have been made.

Go for it, I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

I have an '04 R1200GS and I have had no CANBUS worries, the only fault I can find is that since having the battery drain software fix applied to the bike, I sometimes get the issue where the power socket and accessories turn themselves off which can be annoying, but resetting the ignition restarts them again so its just inconvenient. BMW are reportedly working on another software update to remedy this.

The bike seems very robust despite the rumours and I have no intention of changing it for a newer version of the same model just because it is now out of warranty.

No worries!

I have an '05 GS and the only gripe I have with mine is that summer isnt long enough for me to keep riding it....... :)

Honestly? If the bike fits your needs and you like riding it, you will enjoy owing it.... It seems that some of the earlier ones (2004) models were a bit flakey in varoius areas, but hey wouldnt you expect that first generation anythng these days? They seem to have them well sorted now and even my late 05 model has run faultlessly since I have had it!

People on here are much more likely to put a complaint thread on than a ' I just had an incredible day on my GS' thread, which is understandable. Brits (steroetyping) are historic whingers as well and expect everything for nothing, so when it doesnt live up to thier unrealistic expectations they love to let everyone know about it.

BM have now sold thousands of 12GS's and teh vast majority of oweners are very happy with it. Like me!

Reliability

Not many people write on the forum to say 'my bike is the best I have ever had and it goes every bit as well as I expected and I have had no faults with it.' It may be the situation with the vast majority of us - but it is a bit dull!

r1200gs

go for it , have mine since march done some hard driving :) and abit off road  no problems yet, only fault is back brake lever too low and not sure how to adjust it, minor detail.

It is perfectly natural.Anyone would prefer to enjoy the bike than to spend time in forums telling people how reliable it is.It is not so bad. After all, in a technical thread all you are expecting to read is about technical problems. So,as long as you are aware of this problem magnyfing thing, forums are quite a tool when you are searching for what you could expect in the worst case buying this bike.
A very little part of the riders having such issues with it seemed really disapointed regreting it.On the other hand, a lot of you ,even having to visit the engineer some more times than the regular maintence basis, seem to be in love with it,and would suggest it without doubt.
Since it is by far the best bike in its category, and the category is the best choice for Greece,I guess I should buy the newer model to minize the possibilities, and be aware of the worst case scenario to face some "child illness".
I would apreciate it if you continue posting even if your GS1200R(especially '06) had any problems or not.
Cheers! :beerjug: :beerjug: :beerjug:
