2400 miles on the clock of a brandy new 12GS and I've gone and picked up an 8d nail. (RearTourance, with the hole in one of the sipes, not on the exposed block) Luckily I had fresh blue glue and BMW plugs etc, so I've plugged it. This is the sixth or 7th of these plugs I've done since my first tubeless BMW, so I'm reasonably sure I've done it right.

Here in the USA, virtually no bike shop will patch a tubeless tire due to liability issues, and, of course, the official literature states that these plugs are for emergency use only...

I've never put more than a few hundred miles on a plugged tire before...

So, has anyone experienced failure of a plugged tire that they can attribute to the use of the plug?

Has anyone done long high-speed miles on a plugged tire with OK results? I may not have time to replace it for a while and am trying to asses the reliability of these plugs

Thanks,

Mark (in Lost Angeles)

i've put over 2,000 miles on a bmw plugged tyre, i got the bike from the dealer and thought the tyre had been proplerly plugged, as i've read like your there only a temp repair. so off i go, new bike, get used to it, see how quick it'll go, how hard will it accelerate, took my m8 up the motorway at speed, how long will it stay on the back wheel. so before i was going touring i new the remaining tread would not last, so i had them changed, and low and behold the was a bmw repair plug in there, was not happy at all. on closer insection to the plug it had started to deteriate, as its constantly flexing, so on yours you got to think how big is the hole going to be, if its bigger than the reamer stick, then get it sorted, as other wise you'll not have a slow release of air if it does go, and do you have a pump to top it up?

I use plugged tyres till they wear out normally, and never had any trouble in over 20years, and a hell of a lot of plugged tyres ;)

Great info to have, thanks...This one is a little hole..enlarged to the size of the reamer stick only...
Only did it a few hours ago, so if the pressure holds tonight, I might trust it a bit...if down much tomorrow morning, then I will probably use it as a short-term temp only.

Why do I NEVER get holes in high mileage tires - it's always the young ones :-(

Thanks gents...just confirming...
this is using the little gummy figure-8 shaped BMW plugs or suchlike and not those fancy internal patches that have a tit-like thing that stands proud of the patch and goes into the hole, right?

Thats correct - i also know people that have done trackdays on their hondsukikwak with an plug inserted ( in their tyres :D ) without any grief

My last TKC had a BWM plug in it three days after it was put on brand new.....I ran it until the tyre was worn out, no problems.

As you say, keep an eye on it for a while then forget it ;)

Done 150mph on a hondsukikwak with a plugged tyre before, albeit an internally plugged tyre. As long as the plug is central to the tyre you should be OK. If its anywhere near the tyre wall change the tyre IMHO.

10,000 miles

Day after i got new tourances got a big screw in the rear tyre. Plugged it and 10,000 miles later still going. Will need to replace the tyres in about 1,000miles or so. Dont do off road but i ride all year round all temperatures. Just been through a full winter and summer in Italy.

I use ultraseal in the tyres. But saying that i have never had an issue with defaltion of the rear tyre.

Just me tuppence.
