Hiya all. Im new to the area and am looking for a local (I'm between Stockton & Sedgefield) bike garage that can repair my 1150GS. My clutch went on Sunday out by Scarbrough and I can only find Coopers BMW so far- and they aint cheap! Anyone? Anyone?
ta!

Jim, if you're reasonably competent with the spanners this is a job you can do at home, there's nothing particularly difficult about it, but it is awkward. I understand Steptoe can turn this job round in about six hours, but he knows these bikes inside out. As a rough guide it took me two days to do mine so you'd do well to set aside a weekend for it. But it's definitely do-able:thumb2

This may help you decide;)

I dont actually know whats wrong with it! when i pull the clutch in it has no effect. no signs of fluid leaks & the res is still full! If i had any idea i might be tempted to take a look.

Can you describe the symptoms Jim? Are you saying the clutch doesn't disengage when you pull the lever in ? If you get moving will the bike still pull without slipping?

If so it may be the master cylinder and not the clutch, or the slave possibly. I think the bigger problem with your bike may be in tracing the real fault, rather than fixing it. Anything other than the clutch itself is relatively easy to fix. Do you have pressure against the clutch lever?

Operating the clutch lever is floppy and has no effect. The clutch is permanently engaged. Theres no fluid leakage (externally anyway) and the res is still full. Your right diagnosis is going to be a problem - especially as I am mecanically inept! lol
sigh - id better get it looked at by someone who knows what hes talking about!

Sounds very much like the master cylinder has gone. If it was the clutch itself then you would've experienced slip in the run up to the breakdown. If it was the slave cylinder then you would almost certainly (not 100% nailed on though) have suffered some fluid loss.

Although it is more common for the slaves to go the master cylinder can go. I'd get in touch with Motorworks and see if a repair kit is available. But either way it's good news for you as the repair cost will be far less, as it does sound like it's the hydraulics and not the clutch.
