I am due to be in the Alps 22/02 for 10 days Switzerland to Slovenia and back through Austria, I keep looking at the Stelvio/ Grossglockner and oberall pass webcams which show lots of snow, although the Grossglockner is open theres temps and forcasts of snow and -4,. Just wondering if anyones been out and got any pass info/ updates, as it's looking like I may have to change my route completely.
Cheers in advance, Dave.

Do you mean 22/06?

I would expect the passes to be open by then even though there will still be a lot of snow by the side of the roads.

We were over in that area a week earlier last year and everything was open but you just need to keep an eye on the pass reports.

I went over the Susten pass in CH, near Andermatt, in mid June. There were 10m high stacks of snow on some bends where a channel had been cut through the snow. Unless there is more snow, most passes should be open by 22 June.

From the Stelvio webcam:

weather

hope the sun shines we are leaving for alps on thursday 10th:blast looks like its back to the mapsource to alter the routes again

The Glockner was opened last month but it has been shut a couple of times this last fortnight due to heavy snow at altitude. I would assume it will be okay by the middle of the month. If it is shut he Felbertauern Tunnel is only a 40 kms detour and comes out near Lienz anyway.
That said two years ago in mid August we went south over the Glockner at 10am in beautiful sunshine, when we returned at 3pm the same day there was 4 inches of snow and it was well below freezing. No fun in unlined summer gloves !

this was the grimmsel yesterday afternoon... passable in a car with winter tyres but icy so not a good idea on a bike right at the moment.

I hope the French Alps look a bit clearer than that by this weekend.
We are going to Grenoble area as a base, then riding around from there.

Most passes in the French Alps are open, but the Col de la Bonnette is still closed.
The Col d Izoard is stunning,as were most of the passes from Briancon down to Barcelonnette.

Rode the Grosglockner last Saturday (5/6); lots of snow on the ground at the top but road clear and open. Had a great day out before riding the Gerlos & Fern Passes on the way back.

Pass heading north to Zell (view from 'Biker's Nest'):

rode all the passes around andermatt last Tuesday 8th June, all open
plenty of snow about but roads clear

Just got back from France (Grenoble) Italy (Lake Maggorie) and across Switzerland, all passes appeared to be open even the highest ones.

Cheers,

Piggers
