I'm in the process of planning a europe tour and I'm thinking about camping at Livigno in Italy for a couple of nights. Has anyone stayed there before? Is it any good? Nice campsite? Cheapish restraunts, bars etc?
It looks like a no bad base for a few days riding. Stelvio looks pretty easy to get to from there. Just need to make sure we have a nice place to get back to.

Cheers

yep stayed there a few years ago in a nice hotel.
as a ski resort, it looks pretty ropey out of winter season, quiet lots of places closed and streets are not paved, (snow covers a multitude of sins)etc etc.
a few paces open for meals, we used the hotel.
layout is pretty spread out.
good points cheapo petrol and some good riding. we took the road out past the lake and ended up with 40 min wait at lights at tunnel, at other end of tunnel a customs spot check but luckily we got waved thru so didnt lose any more time

I spent a week skiing there a few years ago. Seemed a bit like a cowboy town. I'm guessing there'd be plenty of accommodation available in the summer months. its also duty-free for no reason I could ever find out.

haven't camped there but here's two camp sites Camping Pemont and camping Al Boscket,we have stayed and eaten in the Bella Vista Hotel during a ski holiday there, there are numerous other restaurants in the town.there is a particularly good Pizza place (other meals available) on the main street unfortunately we cant remember its name off hand as its a wee while since we last skied there.

Bormio down the valley might have a bit more going on in the summer.

Something in the back of my mind says there's a pass towards St Moritz from Livigno. Livigno is a duty free principality left over from Austro Hungarian days.

I've stayed at the bormio 2000 hotel that is up a dirt road in the mountains. Its primary use is as a ski hotel . Great place and you can ride up the ski runs ( that can be very very steep ) or tracks up to and over 3000 m. The views from the rooms are stunning . I've just checked its still open as it was about 25 years ago when I was there . :blast

Bormio has no camping, However Last year we stayed here-http://www.cimapiazzi.it/ and can recommend it,the pitches are on terraces and were quite hard, very steep roads up to them. But the owner and staff were excellent.Food was first class. Its about 10 min ride south of Bormio.

I too thought of staying at Livigno, once there decided against it.Plus it was cold and raining so that swayed the decision to head lower down to Bormio.

Livigno is a curiosity. I would stay there overnight if passing through but not somewhere I would use as a base for a few days

Good base for a trip if you sort out decent accommodation. That's assuming you're there for the riding and not sightseeing in the town. It worked very well for a group of us in a gite with very welcoming hosts who laid on and barbeque and such (could dig out details if there's a few of you but the booking was for a full week...it's quite a long way for a couple of days). The tax free status was an unexpected bonus (fill up every morning with cheap petrol apart from anything else). Apparently, this goes back to Napoleon's time. Livigno was cut off for so much of the year that he considered it unfair for the residents to pay taxes...or at least that's what we were told.

I like the place, plenty of places to eat / drink and cheapo fuel.

Then again I have liked everywhere I have stayed in the Alps so far.

I stayed in Miky's pub (bar and hotel) last September. €65 bed, breakfast and a five course dinner! Good value in my book. Very handy for a run over to Bormio and the Stelvio.
I might be back there this August but I'm sure it'll be busier. Miky's is on the main road just on the tunnel side of the Bormio road junction (roundabout) and next to a gas station.

I booked a group of us into the Hotel Pare in Livigno - in 2011 it was €65 per night for a single room. Comfy hotel, not far to walk into town.

Beware that the route into Livigno from the north, via the Munt La Schera tunnel from Switzerland, is expensive. The tunnel is single track, so you may have to wait 15-20 minutes to be able to pass through, and the toll is currently €13 one way.

I thought there was plenty to do in the area, such as riding the Stelvio, exploring some of the small nadgery passes and riding down to Lake Como. If you're interested I've got routes to Livigno via the B500 in Germany, across Switzerland and back through France. The Swiss parts of the routes avoid all Swiss motorways so you don't have to buy one of their extortionate motorway vignettes.
