The Hotel Olympia, Arabba ? It's in the Dolomites just west of Cortina on the Great Dolomites Road.

Planning a trip and thinking of using this place. Also, does anyone know if the Stelvio is too far from Arabba to be done, there and back in one day?

The hotel? NO - We stayed at the Evaldo, which was fine.

There was a big hotel, at the top of the hill, is that the Olympia?

When you go, be sure to visit the under mountain tunnels carved out by the Italians in the Great War. Make sure you have a head for heights.

Not the Olympia, but have stayed at the biker hotel, Genziana. Very good and inexpensive with all the bike facilities.

Thanks. I didn't think the mileage in itself was too great, more the mileage/terrain if that makes sense. I think the Olympia is the one you describe, it's a forty room 80+ bed establishment.

Starting to look forward to this trip now things are coming together.

No problem.

It is a schlep to Stelvio and back, but certainly doable. Went for the day, lunch on top, in September. 18c at the bottom, -2c at the top with flecks of snow.

There are loads of great roads in the area.

I will try to find the pictures of us in the tunnels and bung them up.

the main thing is to ensure you have lots of time to fully "enjoy" the stelvio itself and surrounding roads....be a shame to get there, ride it once, then have to set off back.....its a road well worth spending time on, never mind the foto opportunities and watching the weird and wonderful spectacle that is the traffic on the road!

I have just asked ViaMichelin for a very simple basic route (not necessarily the one I would take) between Arabba and Passo dello Stelvio.

Time: 03h04 which 00h35 on motorways

Distance: 125 milies which 37 miles on motorways and 45 miles on scenic roads.

That's certainly not too far to go there and back in a day (just as we did) and have time for a stop on the way (and back) and a lunch at the top. We went in September, so the light was starting to draw in a bit. I can't remember it being midnight when we returned. As I recall we left at about 08:30 but didn't slouch about.

I haven't got a small scale map in the office but, from memory at least, it is tricky to go too off-piste between Arabba and the Stelvio pass as there are mountains in the way

I bought a local map by Tobacco, named Dolomites Tyrol. It has no ISBN no.

Stanford's, London. http://www.stanfords.co.uk/ may well do both.

From somewhere I picked up a free Italian motoring touring map called Carta automobilistoca delle Dolomiti by Belluno. It is very simple but has all the suggested routes around the Dolomites, all of which are in the book mentioned above. I think I might have picked it up in the reception of the hotel Evaldo in Arabba. If you PM your address I could photocopy it for you.

Thanks Wapping. I do indeed have a copy of that book and am using it to plan the framework of the trip. Some excellent information. That Stelvio picture has just whetted the apetite considerably!
