During my recent travels in Germany, I was able to borrow a K1200R from the Frankfurt BMW dealer for a four hour test ride. The Taunus region north of Frankfurt is liberally sprinkled with excellent twisty roads through the wooded hills and made for an entertaining ride; even allowing the almost unthinkable thought that this bike might be considered a viable alternative to the venerable GS. :nono

Unlike theK1200 S which I blasted around Rockingham back in June, the naked version seems to lend itself to the sort of customisation which GS owners take for granted. In Garmisch there were already traders displaying modifications: screens. higher bars etc. (Wudo in particular) which would make the thing easier to live with than in standard form. The altered geometry at the front end made it more flickable than the S (although still heavy steering at low speeds; does it really need that damper?), and the loss of a few bhp was hardly noticeable especially with the livelier gearing…:D

.On returning to the showroom with a stupid grin on my face, the sales guy warned me to wait a while before leaving on my trusty R12GS otherwise I would find that “there was nothing happening when opening the throttle”. So after an involuntary departing wheelie while compensating for this “advice”:grndevil , I quickly readjusted to the GS, and immediately took it to some of the roads I had just been riding on the K and –yes, you’ve guessed it,- had even more fun on the GS! OK there wasn’t the blistering acceleration which in any case could never be exploited to the full very often, even on excellent german tarmac. According to the Frankfurt dealer, Herr Plod has been particularly busy the last few months confiscating licences from new K riders…..?:whip

The GS still seemed the more “complete” bike, just as fast around those same bends as on the R, but allowing one to enjoy the ride according to mood; taking in the scenery, or just looning around. And I dread to think what state I would have been in had I done the 500 mile 9 hour trip home on the K…..

Any thoughts or experiences? :idea

Yes i thrashed one within an inch of its life.
I thought it was a great bike. The power is awesome and the noise over 9500rpm is fantastic.
BUT
my license is my ticket to work and no way would it stay clean.
My wrists ached after 40 miles and my back was in bits after 60 miles.
The "heatshield" above the oil filter sums the bike up quite well.Bacofoil!! Yep friggin bacofoil on a £10 000 bike.
Looks like they forgot a few things and just slapped them on after they had finished it.
Oh and i can imagine how it would look after a british winter.
As practical in this country as a chocolate fireguard!!

yeah but it aint a practical, everyday bike is it?

it's a hooligan's weekend play thing, and it does it very well.

I love taking one out for a blast every now and then, though i don't think my licence would last very long either, it tends to encourage uncourteous road behaviour:D

Yup, I had one for the afternoon last week whilst some work was been done to my GS12.

Absolutley loved it for all the reasons given above and will keep my GS, also for all the reasons given above :)

One thing I'm surprised nobody mentioned were the brakes!
Up 'till now I'd rate the GS12 brakes as some of the most powerful I've tried but these were in another league again......empty road, 100mph, right lets see what these brakes are like...........   next thing I know my arms have buckled and I'm sat half way up the tank, I kid you not!

Oh, and the peak was ripped off my Tour-X on the A50 at a speed I'm not admitting to on an open forum ;)

I tried CW's demo bike for an hour whilst my 1100s was in for its MOT. Fabulous performance and something you could spend ages personalising but I don't think that its any better than my GS12 and I still don't think that the engine is 100% sorted out. Noticeable vibes on the overrun indicate to me that they're still not quite in the Jap's league.

Took one out yesterday from SPC. I was amazed at how well the small plastic deflected the wind. 100 plus & wasn't being torn off. But as said earlier, the tyre costs would be too painfull to bear. I do about 12 -14k a year. Took a few minutes to adjust to the crouched position.
