Before i go out and buy some , i have all sorts of varying oils in the garage and was hoping to be able to use one of them ...

ACF 50 ...

Hypoid Gear Oil ....

2 Stroke .................

15/40 Mineral ..............

5/30 Fully Synthetic .......

3 in 1 ..............................

ATF ..................................

I belive the K&N Oil is plant based ....

Any of the above any use .................... :nenau

TIA .... JB ......... :)

Whilst getting my bike sorted in Oklahoma, it turned out the owner of the bike shop is 'N' from K&N.

I asked both him and his mechanic the same question, they both said you must use K&N oil.

It's easy to be cynical since they'd stand to benefit from saying that but both were adamant of the importance of using K&N oil, and that's from the horses mouth:thumb

Ive checked many other forums and seem to recieve the same cut and paste full page :blagblah from K&N robots like you recieved and became quite dubious due to how many filters sold and how many service kits to compliment , however one site did say they have used ATF on their whole fleet as it was the same viscosity but without the red dye in it ...

I know what its job is and was hopping ACF 50 in a can would work ... :P

Might have to waist some pennies then .......

ATF isn't as sticky, possibly clogging the filter a little:confused:

I've just remembered:blast...using the wrong oil will either rot or break down the filter material, which is cotton.

Right then ....

The cleaning solution is basically detergent so i used lavender washing powder and the filter looks new and smells lovely .... :D

The cotton in the filter isn't a scientifically space designed re-entry capable micron stopper .... :P

It's just the oil to re-charge , don't mind buying it if i have to just keen to find an alternative from my Multi Cultural Garage collective .... :bounce1

So i need some sticky'ish oil that will close the pores a little on the air filter stopping the ingress of git big microns into my air intake that will in time shorten the engine life apparently ......... :rob

Anyone any ideas then ( except for Timmy who was brain washed and now suffers from mind control via K&N HQ :D ) .......... :augie

Going to pop to Wilko's as they have a sale on in their Motoring Dept this afternoon while my filter dry's ...........

Take Your Pick

From any water-washable filter oil (as used by the MX, trials & other off-road boys). I use Rock Oil. There's nowt special about K&N.

Don't use mineral oil though - e.g. ATF, gear oil.

Don't forget, I was asking the very guy who invented K&N filters and obviously asked for a genuine and unbiased answer.
These were the guys who prepared bikes for Kenny Roberts etc and know their stuff.

So take your choice, internet opinion or.......:P

Of course on the other hand, why bother with a K&N in the first place on a GS?
Because the standard paper one doesn't let enough air through, or does it??:D

So short listed to Synthetic then .... :bounce1

No, I was referring to the generic types - don't use gear/engine/transmission/final drive type oils - needs to be water-washable and OK with cotton/foam.

However, for a few extra quid, I would go with Tim, except I have loads of Rock Oil aerosol filter oil...;)

It was free ......... :blast

Race bikes don't re-oil their filters due to longevity problems not being a problem ..... :augie

However i just need to be a cheapskate once a year or so to keep me sane .... :D

Come on .... What Oil ..... :Motomartin
