Going to look at a 2002 R1150R with just under 30K on at the weekend, anything specific to look out for ?

Looks like non-abs as far as I can tell.

TIA

Good bikes, love mine. Had an1150 GSA before, and I reckon this handles as well and goes just the same. :green gri

just read here for typical 1150 issues, but as long as it's in good honest condition then you won't go far wrong. 30k is no mileage if it's been looked after.
Try and avoid 'shiny' bike must have mentality, be objective, and you'll be away.
Oh and try not to melt the wiring as I've managed to do this week, when fiddling with it.....because I'm an idiot..... :blast

The lower number of owners and service history always good.
But a lot of owner do a good job of maintaining their own....
As the above poster said 30k miles are minimal for the 11xx engines.
02 should be single spark so no stick coils to worry about..
Dont forget your HPI reports, better to buy save than sorry... ( don't ask how I know :( )

Shocks if original may be quite tired so check/ask if they have been refurbed or replaced

Shocks if original may be quite tired

Agreed.

Also, check the usual: fuel connectors should be metal.
R1150R cable ties around the steering plate were prone to cutting wirings and causing some mildly annoying to bad shorts. Would check the area for any potential trouble.

I bought an 04 with 27000 on it last year. The only thing that'scome to light is check the wiring around the headstock to check the protective sleeves etc are all in tact along the lines of what is suggested above. Turn the bars whilst engine is running if anything looks iffy listen and watch for any erratic behaviour.

Not relevant to mine but Have a feel around the fuel connectors for petrol smell. Recess in paralever for rust, I reckon there's potential for water getting in around the battery and sitting in the area or just in front. Is the amount of corrosion on the front of the engine and the heads acceptable to you for the price asked. Play in rear wheel bearing.

I do think that anything is pretty straight forward fix on these for your chosen mechanic or yourself if you're prepared to get stuck in. If in doubt I guess you can try to negotiate some contingency for remedial work.

Thanks guys :beerjug:

Sounds like a couple of simple areas to check ..

  • fuel tank connectors (check for smell of fuel, and that they are metal)
  • cable ties around the headstock rubbing and wearing wiring
  • tired shocks
  • corrosion on front of engine and heads
  • single not twin spark (02)

And the usual checks of fewer owners the better and HPI check.

What they said

Plus brake lines if original rubber for cracking splitting and ballooning particularly round unions.
Can spoil your day big time.

Usual check for rear bearing / paralever bearing wear

If it's a nice bike I certainly wouldn't discount a twin spark. Stick coils are one of hundreds of parts on a motorcycle that may or may not give trouble, not a deal breaker IMO.

More a reason to offer less. Not a reason to not purchase!

Not a reason to not purchase!

I didn't say that.

The R1150R is a good, honest, and solid bike.
Off my mind those are just the few extra things to check.

Fuel connectors are supposed to be changed by BMW, I think there was a recall (on all 1150s) around 2004/5.
I didn't change them immediately and they broke at some point.

I've also had a "minor" electrical fault (no lights whatsoever apart from turning indicators) due to the cable ties too.
Too bad it happened in the middle of the night while travelling. Well, that's what hazard lights are for. :)

In 70k+ miles with my R1150R these are the only 2 mildly annoying things that happened on my bike.

Listen for throttle body ticking. It means spindles are worn. There are kits out there to fix. Both my 1150's suffered.

From the dark side this was sent ...

I've had my single spark for 8 years now.

The only issue was the headlight flasher didn't work when I had the bike - traced that to a broken wire where the cable ties were!
Repaired it and cut the ties and replaced with loose ones.

Throttle bodies rattle from quite a low mileage - did buy a kit some time back but still not got around to fit it.

Apart from basic servicing ( and bleeding abs system which isn't too bad) been a good solid bike. Done 600 miles in a day on many an occasion and still feel fresh at the end of the day.

Only downside is the weight of the the bike!

If you don't buy this particular bike and decide to keep looking...DON'T consider the R850R...

I spent ages looking for a nice R1150R and came across a seriously mint, low mileage R850R. Thinking 'there can't be THAT much difference' I test rode it for an hour and then bought it....:blast

I have always been a sucker for mint mint mint....a real 'pretty face' merchant. I could tell that the R850R had less power than my previous BMWs (R1150GS/R1200GS) but I thought it wouldn't bother me that much and that I would soon get used to it...

I soon realised that I had bought an underpowered dog. Even the bloke who sold me it called it 'An 80mph sort of a bike' and he was dead right.

It's just my 2p worth and I wouldn't want anyone else to make the same mistake....:)

I think both the headstock wiring and the fuel line connectors were subject to recalls so both should have been done. Not sure how long after a recall you can take it back??
I had the twin spark and did 30k. Stick coils had to be replaced. Otherwise no issues. Did my own servicing, valves, carb balancing etc. Solid bike!
