Apple info required

Not that I know anything about them, but in a weeks time I am off to visit friends in Turkey who have just had a hard drive failure on thier MAC (sorry don't yet know which model).

I don't suppose they use anything like a "standard" IDE drive, so what do they use and where I might be able to source one in a week?
