Has anyone done this or have any advice...

I Have a Garmin Quest
I am connecting it to an Apple G4 powerbook running Virtual PC 7 with Windows XP
I have succesfully installed Mapsource and the drivers from the GPS via USB

However I cannot get it to show as a connected device when in Mapsource.
Yes, it is connected and yes, it is switched on.

I have followed the steps in the Garmin FAQs (1. Go to the Device Manager. In Windows 98SE and ME, click on START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL. Then double-click on SYSTEM, then DEVICE MANAGER. For Windows XP and Windows 2000, (XP) Click START/CONTROL PANEL (2000) START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL. Then double-click on SYSTEM, then HARDWARE, then DEVICE MANAGER.) and I can see the drivers and it says all is well.

I get a message about changing the interface settings on the GPS to ‘Garmin’ or ‘Host” but I cannot find any such settings on the Quest.

Anybody know the answers? Please?

No answers I'm afraid but it works here so it's worth persevering.

I'm running VPC 6 with a Windows 2000 image & a 2610 GPSR.

I start up VPC, wait till it's at the desktop, turn on the GPS and then plug it in. Fire up MapSource and all is well.

Windows never shows the GPS as a connected device i.e. nothing shows in the Connected Devices System Tray and it doesn't complain if you just unplug it.

Does MapSource just not see the GPS or are you getting an error message?

Although the USB connection works for many other Garmin models it will not work with the Quest. It's not clear if it's a Garmin, Apple or Microsoft problem. One workaround is to boot into OS 9 (if you can) and run VPC from there. But OS X, Virtual PC 6 or 7 and a Quest - no chance at present.

Tried the OS9 route.

VPC7 requires OSX so that was a non-starter.

It appears that the problem is VPC, Windows XP and MAc combo = USB problemo grando!

Looks like a cheap Dell for me. :spitfire

Tried VPC 5? I think it works under OS9. I've got a copy somewhere if you need it.

I'm expecting delivery of a new G5 this week some time so I'll only be using Tiger from now on.

Thanks for the offer anyway.

I'm sending VPC back and buying a second hand P3 laptop for running mapsource.
