Are these as good as all the PR suggests.:augie

I got one for me birthday and if I was to use all of its features that they say it does I'd be able to take control of all my video's, films, photo's etc , by using it with WiFi (what ever the f'eck this is)f rom anywhere in the world!!!

Me not that big a techie, and am having problem's getting songs to play!

Advice for an old numpty greatly accepted.:aidan:rob

TV Portation plugin is scrapped so the remote WiFi access to your home media is a no go.

Otherwise they are great. I have the 705 WiFi. :thumb

I assume you have the music in a compatible format? MP3 for example.

Thanks for your reply.:aidan

I am having some minor problems with the music downloads. Some songs that I have downloaded play and others do not:nenau

Don't have much time to play around with it and I am a bit confused with what add on's Archos try to sell to me and would ADD to my use of the 605.

Do you recommend that I buy any extras from them.??:thumb

The Archos won't access wi fi (wireless internet access) without a download from Archos.
Even if you buy the add on, it's not that good. It has a small screen and you need to tap a stylus on the screen instead of typing.

It won't play DVD's directly unless you buy an add-on from Archos or convert them into another format first

I use Magic DVD Ripper to convert DVD's into .AVI files which the Archos can understand. Yes, I had to pay for it, but it is a very useful tool. It compresses the DVD into a reasonable size.

For example, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is compressed to 6.52Gb, it is still very watchable and doesn't fill up the hard drive

I use my laptop to convert the DVD then send it to the Archos via the USB lead.
Transferring files is simple click and drag.

For music, I have a mix of MP3 and WMA files on it, they both seem to play OK. Again, I transfer them via the USB lead.
The USB lead simultaneously charges it BTW

The Gen 5 base plugs into your TV/Video/DVD and place the Archos on the base to record.
This is only useful if you are going to record live TV or videos, otherwise ignore it.
If you record a 'professional' video (one that has been purchased) that has copyright protection, it can only be viewed on the Archos that recorded it; you cannot view it on any other device.

If you are going to travel, buy a travel case (screens are fragile) and a battery extender

What he said :)

I bought the Cinema plugin and I use Auto Gordian Knot(free I think) to copy my DVD's.

looking at getting the 605 4Gb version myself and sticking a 32Gb SD card into it.

I was it to mainly use on the bike because the iPod had a hard drive that jumps. How are these things to control with gloves on? I'd mount it on the handlebars somewhere so it would be easy reach.

Chaps

Thanks for your replies.

Looks like I may have to buy some software and also add on battery, as the built in unit seams crap! A few hours and its done.

Do others have the same problem of short battery life?:aidan

Here is a site that sells add ons and geegaws for the 605 http://www.newmp3technology.com/605+accessories.html

hunt around for spares since it is sometimes cheaper elsewhere.
For example, I bought my battery extender from Amazon.

Do not bother with the aftermarket 'mains charger'
It is slower than a very slow thing.
Charging via USB from the computer is probably faster.

Not easy to use with gloves on. The buttons are sensitive and close to each other.
