I've got an Archos 5 that I bought for the specific purpose holding the video files that I intend to shoot during a trip to Italy this year and I can say that the unit seems alright.
What do you want to know about them, if I can answer then I will.
Got Archos 605wifi for me photo's, vid's and music. Has an 80GD hard drive and only cost £145 on offer in Currys, base station for TV recording, etc adds £30.

Quite a few of the guys here offshore have them and they love them. Ideal for recording from your skybox directly to the Archos. wifi, Email. I would go for the smaller screen but as someone has said Netbooks are getting very versatile and not much bigger. The Archos seems to have a lot of niggles and you need to down load alot of plug ins which seems a pain. I am thinking of selling my Ipod classic to part fund an Archos 5 myself as I detest I-Tunes and quite fancy an archos for my cabin with headphones
It will play AVI out of the box, but if you want to play VOB files then you will need the 'cinema' plugin and if you want to plau MPEG4 stuff then you will need the 'video podcast' plugin, each about £12.
The hi-def plugin is still not available, and knowing Archos could still be some time.
You can buy all three plugins for about £25 from Archos.
The firmware does seem flaky, but it is not too bad.
You want to decide why you want an Archos in the first place.
I have the 605 and it will fit into an inside pocket. The battery life can be extended by an external battery holder that takes AA batteries.
The 705 is much larger.
If you want to surf the net - the 605 is not neccesarily good at it. Stylus and touch sensitive screen for a keyboard.
Look for something else.
If you want to sit in a military PAX terminal for five hours and watch some movies - then this is what you are looking for. (I speak from experience here )
I use Magic DVD Ripper on my computer to convert DVD's into AVI files and download them through the USB lead - which charges the 605 at the same time.
PS. Shop around - the price of the Archos and the components varies greatly. For example, it's cheaper on many websites than at Dixons duty free at Heathrow.
