Say, for sake of argument, you had a 2011 gs with 2000 miles on the clock and took it to a bmw dealer for its annual service, would they change the engine oil?
Presumably, the oil would have been done at 600 mile "running in" service, so would they change the oil again only 1400 miles later?

Thanks in advance

Yes oil change is part of the annual service

I'm confused.
If you had a 6000 mile service done (oil changed) and took the bike in again a month later (having covered only 10 miles), would they change the oil again?

Where's the line?

I'm away from home and need to make a decision quick!

Don't have the service done until you've done 6000 miles.

Presumably oil was changed or fact was changed :nenau paperwork :nenau

a period of time + 600 miles running in service or just running in inspection? then 1400 miles later.

confused :blast

now 6000 miles service , one month later (10 miles) I doubt they would change the oil why would they :nenau

the line is always at the bottom but that's a guess

If you go back one month later it's not an annual. Following the service schedule by the letter if you did 10 miles over the following 12 months they would want to change the oil again.

Of course you could tell them to feck off.

I'd simply tell them what you want, outside the warranty period that is - up until then you'd have to meet the requirements - which I find a little odd. I had my last bike serviced, annual service, the dealer then set my next service for the mileage service, which was only 2,000 miles away - seems crazy to me to operate this way - why didn't they simply do the main service early, rather than try and get two services in?!

There seems absolutely no need to meet both mileage and annual servicing, so I'd meet either or, a simple oil change and good look round the bike (fettle where required - change parts as appropriate) if it hasn't covered many miles in the previous year is usually sufficient - full service if miles have been racked up etc.

If you get the service schedule you can see what is carried out as part of the service - most of this anyone of us could do, so I don't see the point in paying BMW prices for this to be carried out.

I have always thought the "Annual" service was to basically cover the brake fluid changes not normally performed in the 6,000 mile service as its time not mileage related. On my GSA service schedule, the "Annual" service is done after the first year and thereafter every other year. That's how I'm keeping it going as I do it myself anyway. The service schedules for a 6k service and an annual service seem to me to follow that methodology. So if you had a 6K service done and you took the bike back for an annual service 10 miles later, they should do the brake fluid changes which weren't done in the 6K. It would of course make sense to have them done at the same time if you can work it that way.

Thanks for the answers. My above post didn't make proper sense; I went to edit it, but lost my connection.
What I was getting at was that it seems to me that there are two service schedules running in parallel; mileage related and age related.
So, if the bike had a 6k service the oil would be changed. If the annual service was due only a few weeks later, and the bike had only done a few miles since, would the oil be changed again?
It seems ridiculous to me.
I can see that if a longer period had passed then it might be worth changing it.

I'm asking as I'm away and the bike has pinged up a service warning. It had an annual 4 months ago and has covered about 4k since. It had only covered 1k miles previous to this annual service since having a "proper" service. May be that the service indicator wasn't zeroed last time; or maybe it wasn't done?
I didn't own the bike then, so don't know for sure.

Think I'll change the oil to be on the safe side. If it wasn't done at the annual, I'll end up doing approx 9k on the same oil.

Would 9k on the same oil be bad news?

I worry too much!!

You worry too much. :)
If you're in warranty and worried about such things as stamps in book. And have loads of spare cash, then let your tame dealer do what he wants, pay the bill and sleep easy knowing that one day someone will happily buy your Full Dealer Service History bike.

Meanwhile back in the real common sense world, an annual oil change costs pennies, or more often if you clock the miles, unlike most of us on here. And just do what has to be done when it's needed. Condition based maintenance is the smartest way, as applied to tyres, brake pads, bulbs. But most of us don't have an oil analyser - so just change it every year or so.

I don't get out much these days but the bike will be MoTd next week, the tyres and pads are good, it may get an oil change soon and it will be taken on track in June. These are Rufty Tufty round the world bikes for crying' out loud. They don't suddenly stop working just because the odometer says XYZ or its the spring equinox. Just riide the fecker.

The service shedule is not confusing at all, its there to make the dealers profit.

My van does 35,000 between services, and the full service cost £398. I should add, the van takes 11lts of oil. MB229.51.

The bike going in, mid april. Cost £322.80 for 6k service only. :blast
