I was here, trying to get there
Hi all, i might have put this in the wrong section but has anyone ridden from Arnhem to the Harz mountains? I'm looking for a scenic / interesting route rather than motorways and dual carriageways, though i'm guessing my pal on his K13 wouldn't mind a bit of autobahn'ing .
Going to visit my uncles resting place at Arnhem, he was part of XXX corps trying to get to the bridge, an epic effort overshadowed by the incredible airborne story but well worth researching, good book called "In the shadow of Arnhem" by Ken Tout if anyone's interested.
Thanks,
Andy

Rode from Rotterdam to Bad Grund in the Harz mountains Via Arnhem in 2008.
We had an overnight stay outside Rheine to brake up the 330 mile journey.
I remember how little progress we made on the smaller roads and ended up on the A30 to make some progress. It was wet and I did not really enjoy the journey until the sun came out and we visited the old town of Hameln.
From there to the Harz seems to be picture book Germanic villages.
Once in the Harz I really enjoyed the holiday,
One big hotel in Bad Grund caters mainly for motorcyclists,http://biker-hotel-harz.de/en/your-biker-hotel-harz-mountains-germany/ this was full so we stayed in a great Adams family style hotel called the Hotel Bellevue http://www.hotel.bellevue.harz.de/

We're planning to go to the Hartz in July staying at the Harmonie biker hotel.
Would be interested in your experiences and thoughts :beerjug:

Cheers.

The Harz, what a great place for bikers. The main roads are smooth and well surfaced, plenty of rougher side roads to explore between.
The area is riddled with mines and old mining villages. There are lots of web sites for Herz tourism, plenty to see from old towns, narrow gauge railways, mining museums etc. Goslar is a world heritage site and worth visiting because its at the end of a wonderful ride across the mountains.
Some of the small towns east of the Harz are worth visiting, they missed the worst of WW2 and ended up in East Germany resulting in almost zero changes since the early 19th century. That was 5 years ago and things were changing quickly.
In 2008 the Harz was very depressed commercially, factories had closed all over, mining was almost finished and for tourism the lack of winter snow had almost finished the skiing. The result was very cheap accommodation and prices generally. Since then they have had several good winters and summers with a revival of tourism.
PS if you plan to stay at the Harmonie book it now, it fills up very quickly once bikers start to think springs on its way.
The hotel we stayed at to brake up our journey was www.altes-farmhaus.de its a member of a biker approved guest house scheme operating in Germany.

Sounds good Sooty.

That hotel looks good too - I like the sound of the midweek deal but will have to check if it's 3 nights and 3 evening meals, if so it's a bargin.

Look forward to hearing about your trip - when are you going?

If your thinking of staying in bad grund try pension koala (sorry don't know how to post a link).Vicky the owner is a Australian and is very nice lady.Pension koala is a fantastic place to stay if you want somewhere a bit quieter:beerjug:

Hotel Harmonie - Bikers Hotel Harz

We spent a 5 day break (special offer) with Peter and Corrine at the Hotel Harmonie last month and what a great time we had. We were greeted with the warmest welcome ever, and they couldn't have done more to make us feel at home. They have obviously grafted over the winter months and refurbished this great guest house/hotel to a high standard. The bedrooms are spacious and spotless - 10 double rooms, which also have double bed settees in them, and also 3 apartments. The breakfasts were great - as much as you like and the bar is 'open all hours’. Peter does a fantastic BBQ and Corrine's extras were delicious. They will point you the direction of the best restaurants in the town and, if they can, they may even join you for dinner. The cosy bar in the hotel is a great place to chill and chat, with plenty of space for larger groups too.

Peter will show you the best/bendiest/quietest roads. He has maps and routes at hand and knows all the best places to explore. If he has time, Peter loves to show around himself. We had a brilliant day out with the both of them and another couple to English 'lads' and were shown loads of hidden gems! The Harz are beautiful with loads of interesting places and sites to visit as well. Peter can show you the best cake cafe's too - yum!

Literally - nothing is too much trouble for this lovely couple - from ice creams and camera chargers to boot deodoriser and Spanish brandy! Ask Peter for some of his local tipple -more'ish or what!! We just can't recommend this hotel, and the Harz, enough; we can't wait to go back again! BRILLIANT!!!! :clap:clap
