I hesitate to call it a rebuild, because i've been assured the engine and gearbox have been rebuilt already.
Apparently, its had its gearbox overhauled while the lever return hairspring was replaced. Its had a new clutch and main seal.
I've got a big list of things its had done.

However, the paintwork is atrocious and needs doing. The seat is ripped and everything is a bit tired.
On the good side, it was on the road until about 6 months ago, its all pretty much original and in mostly good condition. Everything seems to be where its supposed to be.
Its a late 1981 model, so it has the lighter clutch, the 'better' gearbox internals, the quickshift mechanism, the master cylinder in the correct position, twin Brembo brakes up front and a disc at the back. The silencers are stainless Staintunes so rot free and an acceptable noise comes out - not too quiet and not loud.

I'm going to remove the RS fairing and sell it - i'm not going to be long distance touring on it and its too hot here to be of any use. It would cost a fortune to repaint and its better off to be sold along with is hardware to someone that will use it. Therefore, i'm going to need parts to return it to a standard naked road bike. Headlamp holder ears, rubbers and front indicators for starters...handlebars and other things that will no doubt become apparent.
I'll respray it all myself, so it will be acceptable, not show winning - not sure what colour yet.

Any parts you have, i'll be interested as they seem thin on the ground here. :thumb2

I started with the stripdown - no nightmares found yet.
Every bolt has a standard washer under it - all nuts and bolts are standard.
Getting the fairing off is a pig of a job that entails taking the crashbars off and undoing about a million other bits.

I cant undo the top fork yoke nuts that hold the forks on - they are likely seized - i think i'll heat them up and drip ATF on them and let them soak for a few days.

Ok - been thinking about what direction to go in with this bike,

I'm not sure i want to do a 'standard' restoration, but i also don't want to 'cafe racer it.

I don't like the seat - its too long, the rear subframe is too long and the mudguard is oversized as is the tail light.
The stance of standard Airheads is all wrong to me - much too high at the front and the rocker fins sloping backwards - they need to be level
The front forks are too long, or the rear shocks are too short - and also devoid of any damping. ? - will probably get IKON (koni's ) to replace them.
Now I can either shorten the front forks by spring cutting, stiffening them with a spacer , raising them through the top yoke - which then will need a new top toke - or I leave the as they are and raise the rear an inch or so.

All of this points to doing some sort of street scrambler thing, with longer rear shocks - or modified subframe and a single seat - there will never be a pillion on it.
I don't really want to chop up the standard parts - not sure why, but with stuff available of the shelf to modernise it all, i think i'll go down that path.

Watch this space..

Guessed at some Ebay h'bars dimensions after checking lots of other pics - turned out well - about same as my 650GS bars but in steel.

I got the shocks slightly overlength - i hate droopy BM back ends
Decided to try the std subframe for now

Tank is staying bare metal with laquer to stop rust

Handlebar controls and risers reamed using adjustable hand reamer to allow them to fit the bars

Ebay ally headlight holders do the job

Bought a decent air lift ramp to stop my old back creaking.. ;)
Front mudguard trimmed shorter but same profile and sprayed wheel silver with std forkbrace, also silver
Disc inners painted silver
Ebay lucas style tailight fitted - spent ages cutting a 'slot' into it so the subframe loop passes through so its parallel to the ground - ( not like in post 4 - that looks shit )
Standard Front headers were stainless, so they were sanded back to clean and used

Ebay Silencers fitted - EMGO tulip / cocktail shaker style - straight , no bend

Rear RS standard rack tweaked and painted silver to fit brackets i made that are bolted to the seat - in black. This makes the bike for me - i wanted to do something with the back end and this fits the bill perfectly - a sort of GS style

Using underseat tool box to relocate the battery.
