It's why riders of older BMWs have a permanent rictus grin

Although I thought it was the brakes!

Only proper tank slapper i've ever had was with the RS fairing, and the same goes for two other people i know who've experienced the fabled BMW full on slapper. :D
The only other incident I heard of was with a friend's RS. It happened twice with him on board. He was of very slight build and, knowing him, it was unlikely that he was going fast at the time. He got rid of it pretty damn quick.

Did they ever find out what was the cause?

I had two of the old met police R80/7 special escort bikes when they were sold off, they had 55 BHP instead of the standard R80/7 50 BHP, and the difference was quite noticable when riding them .

I've seen that the tech data for the R80/7s showing 55 vs 50 BHP mentions different CRs (9.2 vs 8.2) as well as FD ratios (32:10 or 37:11). Were the police bikes different in any other way - e.g. the cam shaft? Or carb jetting?

I've experienced the slapper at low speed (25 mph) which went away after changed tyre and shimmed wheeled bearings.

I met a lady riding an RS in Llandovery and she had the same issue, her tyre's were also on the worn side of life.

I chuck my tires as soon as they wear flat, no matter how much life is left. Just junked a set of Mitas EO7s with 6,000 km on them, previous set did 14,000 km and still had a decent profile, but I could just about park the bike without the sidestand with this set.

Learned the hard way in the days when I fitted a sidecar so I could ride my bike to work all through a Scottish winter - when you removed the chair in the spring you wouldnt get 100 yards down the road on the flat spotted tires before a full blown tankslapper.

There may be other reasons , but with good, nicely rounded tires on my airheads ,and normal maintenance , I have never had a tankslapper.
