Has anyone been to a place called Malta in Austria as i went to the NEC Bike show and found a chap that runs a hotel there ( 90 miles south of Saltzburg)
As thinking of trying it , but not travelled that far yet - any ideas about the place or suggested ways to get there .
Thanks

I haven't been to that particular village but the area is great for biking. The 99 road that runs parallel with the motorway from Radstadt south runs close by. This is a great road that goes over the Obertauern pass rather than through a tunnel.

You have the High Tauern to the west with the Grossglockner, the Italian Alps & Dolomites to the SW and the Julian Alps in Slovenia to the SE. Seems like an ideal base to me.

The route I would take to get there would probably be a fast motorway dash to get to the Black Forest for an overnight stop. Down the eastern side of Lake Constance into Voralberg with another stop in Landeck (Hotel Enzian maybe). From there you can have a nice ride through the High Tauern to Malta. 2 overnight stops between Calais & Malta makes for a reasonable ride with an opportunity to see stuff along the way. You could give yourself some extra time by getting a late afternoon ferry/train and stop an extra night in France. That way you can have an early start in France and get plenty of km under your belt before lunch.

To Malta, book in for 3 days and get the Karten card that gives the Grossglockner for free, otherwise €18. all routes give great twistys and fantastic scenery. Once at Malta "the world's your Lobster" for top roads

Been all over Europe for last 10 years and always keep clear of big towns etc trying to use the twistest roads we can, if you need any other routes, I got loads.....The route from Stanzach is WOW, the roads are amazing, fast smooth sweepers in the mountains, hairpins ..it's got the lot!!! Enjoy your trip. We are going down to Resia first week in June, just up from Stelvio, which is so overrated, there are much better roads....just look on google maps..tranfer to tyre and then to TomTit.....:blagblah

Stick,
You want to be heading towards Garmisch Partenkirchen, for a night or two, then down to Malta ;)

We've got a few routes prepared already, suppose it would give you an idea... if you want them ( for GPS) pm me :thumb

I am that chap!

:beer:AS (part) owner of Gasthof Hochalmspitze in Malta I just had to add my bit to this tread. We have had a fantastic response from our stand at the NEC. In fact there are now only two days in the entire summer that we don't yet have British bikers staying with us. We are really looking forward to welcoming you all.

As has been mentioned we give our guests a Hohe Tauern National Park card.
This is a free pass to some great roads in our area. (Grossglockner,Nockalmstrasse,Maltahochalmstrasse and many more) It also gives free boat trips on some of the lakes, free use of some mountain railways and cable lifts and hundreds of other attractions. We pay for the card and the cunning plan is that our guests save money during the day and spend it in our bar in the evenings!

We have more than 25 day routes on our guests PC(Garmin Mapsource) so no matter how long you stay there will always be something new to see.

As has been mentioned I can send out vouchers for the Grossglockner. I need full names, bike reg numbers and details of who is riding solo and who has a pillion (Austrian bureaucracy is legendary). We are in the UK until the 11th. April and we can send vouchers out from here thus avoiding the Austria to UK postal lottery.

On a personal note I would be very grateful if those of you coming could explain to Ros why it is essential for me to occasionally get out on my bike with you guys. There might be a beer it it for successful petitioners

John

just back from a three night stay at gasthof hochalmspitze in austria, john and ros were great hosts and couldnt do enough to help us, the facilities they have for bikers is brilliant (garage with tools and bike lift) and it is in an ideal location to explore the many attractions on offer. beer was also very good, hope to go back next year :beerjug:

Just got back from a four night stay with John and Roz at the Hochalmspitze, and can't praise it highly enough, from the warm hand shake and cold beer on arrival to the friendly wave off as we left, the staff are superb and Matt and myself were the first winners of the lightweight award (we gave up on a run to Italy as it was raining). Will definately be returning:thumb
