Hi, all
Has anyone ever bought a 'Tour-4 Ticket' for Austrian roads, I think it covers the Grossglockner, Nockalmstrass, Gerlos and another I can't remember.
Can they be bought prior to travelling online??

Here is the link to the Grossglockner site page http://www.grossglockner.at/en/preise/

You need to think the whole thing through, for instance if you stay with us (min 3 nights)you will only pay 10 Euros for the Grossglockner, nothing at all for the Nockalmstrasse, Maltahochalmstrasse, Villacheralpinestrasse and the Goldeckstrasse. Plus loads of things like mountain railways, chair lifts and boat trips on the lakes are all free. This is via a tourist card scheme we subscribe. With the tourist card you can ride these roads use the chairlifts etc as many times as you want, with the Tour ticket you only get one day pass for each road.

If you buy the card direct you are paying 26 Euros (plus 3 Euros if you ride the Villacheralpinestrasse-you should!) With our card you would only pay 10 Euros for the Grossglockner and 5 Euros for the Garlos which is not covered by our card because it is outside Carinthia.

We are just over a hour from the southern tollbooth for the 'Glockner and also about the same from both Italy and Slovenia.

If you want any further info on the region and it's roads just let me know.

Free Grossglockner

As John says above, a bit of planning may result in free access to many of the roads with tolls.
The last time we went over the Grossglockner (2011) we stayed here:-

an excellent Pension in Heiligenblut, which is just below the southern toll for the Grossglockner. we pre-booked the acommodation to they contacted us and sent us a voucher to allow us to arrive via the Grossglockner free and allowed us free access over the next couple of days as well:thumb

Hotel on Grossglockner

Does anyone know the name of the hotel on the pass? I remember reading in Ride there was one.

Ride mag mentioned staying on the Glockner I think-we don't get any UK publications here so I don't know the details. I know you can stay at the Eidelwiess Spitze which is the highest point you can actually ride to. Downside is you might end up like some people we met last August. They had booked a night there, arrived early evening, enjoyed the wonderful views etc. Only thing was when they got up the next morning the road was closed and there was 30cms of snow on their car. They could not leave until the afternoon of the second day when the road re opened. Not a problem if you are flexible but if you want/need to be elsewhere it just could be.

Such closures for bad weather occur on average once a month throughout the summer season. A day or two at the most and the road is clear again but could be a problem if you get the timing wrong! It's one reason why we always advise that you have a plan B when travelling in the mountains.

Wherever you end up -enjoy

John
