Aux fuel tank

Looked at the cost of a second fuel tank you need to contact wonga

I'm planning a trip to magadan in 2015, I'm looking at fabricating a fuel tank to go on a r1150 gs, after giving some thought the safest place will be in place of the rear seat as it will be protected by the pannier frames, not keen on plastic containers, I'll use aluminum
I'll make it so it can be removed at any time to gain accesses to the tools or to put the seat back on when not used I'll lock it down the same way as the seat,
I'm thinking 20L would be good so it will give a range from both tanks 400 plus,
Not keen on the round tanks so it will be flat as I will have options to strap bags on,
Don't think it will need to be pumped ether as the rear is higher than the bottom of the tank so gravity fed is possible.
I'll keep a list of what materials i use and how I connect fuel line to the tank so if any one is interested I can send a pick list, I'll post pictures of the tank when it's done

that is more or less what I'm doing but instead of steel I'm using aluminium, for the weight reason and cosmetically looks much better than having a big block of steel stuck on the back also I have a pair of aluminium panniers so as my wife says it will be all matching, my design will be bit more user friendly​

I may be wrong but I think you will find the weight of an aluminium one will be much the same as you need around twice the thickness of aluminium for same strength. Have to say never considered the cosmetics of it - bloody ugly bikes at the best of times

Do you need another 20 ltrs? The weight 50 ltrs will kill you, plenty of people have done this area with smaller tank ranges than you already have.

Agreed.

It's one of those things that you may have on a 'I want' list, but shouldn't really be on an 'I need' list.

That said, there are many different types available.....if you google for the Iron Butt websites, you'll find dozens....custom made or off the shelf.

If I really wanted extra fuel capacity, I'd probably look at rotopax first.....

Modular systems with a tried and tested mounting kit....and far FAR cheaoer than a bespoke Aux tank set up.

If you want bling that makes you feel like a fake RTW hero, a custom built ally tank will do, but if you just want a few litres if you fuck up in your calculations, there are many far cheaper and far more flexible options

I've made a template, the base will be made of 4mm aluminium with two supports along the base, the rest will be 3 mm
The image that's attached is more or less what I want, its nice and low so the space at the back can still be used to bungee big items on like spare tyres, tent, water proof bags.
