Hi All,

I just wanted to find out what are the sort of km's or miles you would expect to get out of a clutch on a GS. I am selling my GS this is my first GS I replaced the clutch at 57000km.

From what I have been told by other GS owners and BMW dealers that this is quite normal km's for a clutch to be replaced. I have a person that is interested in the bike but he thinks the clutch was replaced too early according to his friends. He told that his friends have gotten between 100000km to 200000km out of their clutches. This seems to me extremely good km's to get out of a clutch. I am a diesel mechanic by trade and I know that clutches can burn very quickly according to who is using the clutch.

I just thought I would try and get some feed back from other GS owners.

Thanks

-Ben

G'day Ben.Just replaced my clutch at 55K miles (guess about 87K Km).
The friction plate had plenty of meat on it and it was only replaced due to spline wear. The usual cause of short clutch life seems to be oil leaks screwing the plate or off-road butchery. As you said in your post,it all depends on the owners ability.
Cheers mate,Col.

I changed the clutch on my 1100 at about 120000miles,there was nothing wrong with it,but just done it while the gearbox was out:thumb

My 1100 at 18K miles ( no oil leaks, just worn).

My old 1150, still original clutch at 99K miles.

Average those out !!!

I am at 96,000km on my R1100GS - still going strong as far as I can tell . the cable needs adjusting now and again on the 1100 but other than that no slippage that I can detect yet.

I was in my local dealer today and clutch life was mentioned. The service manager was of the opinion that mine may need replacing soon-ish as he told me that they tend to go around the 50-60k mark (my 1150 has done 51k). He gave me a rough quote of £800

How does that sound ???

Thanks everyone there seems that you can get a lot of km's out the clutch I guess that depends on where you ride it i.e a lot of road and how you ride it.

Wait until you really need to replace it, not when someone tells you they "tend" to go :nenau whats that all about.

Ahh, i can see what thats all about now. £800 as a rough guide is what thats all about - how stupid of me. :D :augie
