I've been running AVG for something like 6 months after some good advice here and giving Norton the boot and replacing it with AVG.
Thank you again people.
Every morning when I fire up the PC AVG presents me with an exclaimation mark in a red box on its little icon signifying that update manager is not well but a simple "update now" fixes the problem. I suspect this is a hang up from getting rid of Norton as I couldn't quite get rid of all of it despite using the Norton tools to uninstal it all.
However, as at yesterday when I try my morning update with AVG I get the response that I have an invalid update control CTF file and I cannot restore the pretty multicoloured flag to the AVG icon. Yesterday it seemed to disappear after several "update now" attempts but alas today it won't go away.
I have used tools and advanced settings and tried update in various "when to update" options but it doesn't make any difference.
So questions please -
Do I simply ignore this problem as anti virus, resident shield etc. are all present and correct or is it best to go the uninstal, reinstal route and hope that fixes the problem.
I suspect the fist option here will present problems soon though if it doesn't all go away as I'll fall behind with the software uodates.
Thanks very much.

I've noticed recently a few times that the AVG update has fallen over or been unhappy. First time removed AVG completely and re-installed with no difference  now, I just wait a day and see if it fixes itself, which usually it does :)

So don't ask me what to do, it's all PFM to me

There is some information about this on the AVG website, and a utility to delete the corrupted file, download this, run it, and all will be well again.

If you receive the "Invalid update control CTF file" message during AVG update, most probably the update control files are corrupted. In this case it is necessary to delete these files. During a next attempt to update AVG, new control files should be downloaded and update process should be completed without any difficulties. Please kindly follow these steps to delete mentioned control files:

* Download the utility from the link below to your hard drive
deleteupdatefiles.exe
* Run the downloaded utility (command line window will appear for a short time)
* Try to update the AVG program

If the issue persists, then please follow steps below:

* Double-click the My computer icon on your desktop (or open Start -> My Computer)
* Navigate to the following folder:
o Windows XP / 2000:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download *
o Windows Vista:
C:\ProgramData\avg8\update\download *
* Find the avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf files and delete them
* Restart your computer

* Please note that some folders/files could be hidden. For more information how to view these hidden folders/files please visit this FAQ: How to view hidden files and folders

There's a problem with an AVG update right now. On XP it removes some file or other that prevents XP starting up, so your fked. AVG apparently have advice about this on their site (I haven't checked) or Google it.

Happily I don't have XP or AVG. Sounds worryingly like diseases.....

Did it to me last night, quick visit to AVG home page, d/l the fix and it took 8 hours  to do a full scan, BUT it's worked, everything is hunkydory now and it also found four hidden revsci tracker virii :mcgun:mcgun
