There was a piece in one of the Irish broadsheets last week about a guy who came off his bike and sadly broke his back, putting him in a wheelchair.

He lamented not having been wearing a back protector which he feels could have saved him.

I have a CE back protector in both my jackets but I am aware that some of the rice rocketeers wear a separate back protector in the form of a waistcoat type thingy. Is this simply cos leathers dont accomodate same or is it a higher level of protection?

Any experience or reccomendations of what is the safest option?

I use a Givi spine protector. 2 elasticated straps over the shoulders and a velcro waistband hold it in place. Bought it mainly for use with lightweight summer jackets, but it is so unobtrusive I wear it all the time now.

The way I look at it, anything that gives spine protection must be worthwhile. No doubt the naysayers will be along shortly to tell me that wearing a spine protector cost them their mobility/spine/lives/house/divorce/etc.

I had leathers with a built in hein Gerricke hiprotec back protector, but I bought a fabric jacket and I recently bought a bmw back protector II, top bit of kit and the kidney belt part does'nt half reduce backache

Knox and Dianese safety jackets for me depending on what outer jackets i wear. Knox is very warm in the winter and keeps the kidneys in position and very warm. No backache with one of these on.

I've got a Dainese full length back protector for wearing on my RSV. I use it under my leathers all the time and sort of forget about it. It's got shoulder straps and a wide velcro'd waistband.

I had an inbuilt back protector in my Frank Thomas goretext kit, but it was just a crappy piece of foam. I've replaced it with a shorter length Dainese insert which fits into the pocket formerly occupied by the FT foam item.

I feel sort of naked without a back protector.

However, a back protector wont protect your neck unfortunately - it doesn't go up that far and wont stop your head lolling around in a prang. You want a helmet with an airbag skirt doo-dah for that.

Slightly O.T.T.

There are several of these on the market.
I have experience of Dainese ,and Clover.
The Clover i bought because it got the best rating in
Ride magazine.
I then bought a new dainese,cos i think the quality felt
better ,and it may feel better on i am not sure why!
but it feels good.And i am more at ease with it on.
I use it 99% of the time and feel naked with out it
both leather and gortex .
If you dont have one get one.
It just may make the differance !
Who am i to preach i bought the girl friend one and she
will not put it on , together we would do 5000mls
a year by bike.Every little helps.
