Backfire on the over-run (1200GS)

This is probably nothing to worry about, but my 1200GS backfires quite alot on the over-run. I've heard this can cause damage to the throttle bodies.

Is this normal?

Is it a proper backfire, or just a "burble"? They all "burble" or pop to an extent.

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust fitted?

If it's a proper backfire, check your exhaust system for air leaks.

I can't see off the top of my head how a backfire could reach the throttle bodiews, as the inlet valves are never open at the same time as the exhaust ones. Not saying it's impossible though, someone will probably be along soon to explain it

You should notice very little or any 'burbling/backfire' on a fully closed throttle.

However, have it open just a fraction on deceleration and you will get quite a lot of popping from the silencer - nothing to worry about IMHO, infact I often do it on purpose just for the sound.........................

It is just a popping and burbling, but I do shut the throttle off fully. If it's not bad for the bike then I'm happy, it's a great sound!

they all seem to be like that.

Mine doesn't do it on gentle overruns, but if you change down aggresively and engine brake from high rpm, it makes a wonderful pop/burble as it slows
