Any experts around :jibber on how I go about balancing Bing 32 mm carbs on my R80GS after stripping down and cleaning out the muck from the needle and jets.
Got it running reasonably well by ear, but have borrowed a set of vacuum guages and also a mercury type.(Looks like a blood pressure job). Can't seem to get the readings even. Do I leave it to the 'lstening test' or is there a set procedure?? :(

If it's rideable, get it up to temp and do the following:

make sure that the carbs have even free play of the throttle and choke cables at the carb end (roughly 1/3 of the metal male end that fully recesses into the adjuster)

set the mixture on each carb

now hook up the gauges. The carb drawing more vaccum has a lower idle setting, adjust both carbs to have even vaccum and the idle you choose

check the mixture as the bike will have warmed up a bit more, and re-check the idle speed

Now tighten down the throttle tension screw and raise the engine speed just above idle, say 1,200 or so rpm's

now check for even vaccum, this would be to adjust the throttle pull, and only works at low rpm's as the CV carbs adjust automatically after small throttle openings.... once again, the carbs with more vaccum has less throttle opening.

then, go back and check the idle balance again.

good luck!

it's been posted elsewhere on the site but if you arent getting even vacuums there might be something else amiss. Theres a whle list of stuff to check such as valve clearances, diaphragms, floats before you go to balance as any of these will effect your readings.

The best way i found is to balance them Mechanically
I.e by backing off the idle screws until the butterflies seat
Then adjust the idle screws the same amount then fine tune it by ear
Same with the mixture screws
Then i sync the cables so both carbs hit the full throttle stops at the same time
A quick road test is enough to fine tune the sync for least vibration

I have used all sorts of fancy gauges in the past but found setting them up on the road works the best
And you can get a twin close enough to start with without them
