Baslow

For F***s Sake. The actions of a handful of idiots can undo in a few minutes all the hard work done by the likes of the TRF and all the goodwill any sensible greenlaner does their best to promote. Mindless, stupid f*****g idiots.

Makes my blood boil this

I thought it was only closed to 4 wheels?

Its a cracking lane.

Bit of a tricky one, locals claim there is a TRO dating back 10 or 12 years but there does not appear to be any evidence of this. There is a claim pending to upgrade it to a BOAT but use at the moment is a bit dubious.

No excuse for the alleged behaviour of the riders though:mad:

I just spent 1 hour trawlin the net to find it and Paul beat me to it

I am gonna talk to Kevin Lowe the local plod regarding the lanes use/ TRO restrictions

For anyone who has been out riding with me I call this the secret lane - one of the best superb views, even a seat at the top to take a rest

The lady I spoke to informed me that they ( police) will be doing another stop and talk/inspection/liasion/frightening session very soon
Keep it legal and read the maps/ keep um up to date :thumb :rob

Todays news from the Authoritys
Dear all

As we have discussed recently, Bar Road is a Restricted Byway, is signed as such at Baslow, and is on our web-site as such. Responsibility for improving signage on-site rests with DCC.

Confusion about its status stems from the hisorical status of the route, when it was a RUPP, which drivers /motor bikers took to mean they could legally use it.
In an attempt to curb inappropriate use, Derbyshire CC (NOT THE PEAK PARK!!!) imposed a TRO, preventing its use by 4 wheeled vehicles, but allowing motor bikes.
However, since a change in the legislation, it is now designated as a Restricted Byway, which carries no vehicular rights at all.

My reply to them -

Thanks for your reply
I will inform all I know of this lane route is at moment a restricted Byway
( Officially )
To be fair there is a sign at the top end saying so ( restricted byway ) - At the Baslow end is just a no vehicles round sign
I have always used this route as its status was / is a RUPP = Road used as a public path
I believe there is a request to have the lane fully established as a BOAT ( Byway open to all traffic )
All this confusion and delay in proper signage does not help does it
I have always thought and promoted that these routes are not just for today but for everyone's use for years to come
Pony trekking on two wheels is a style that I promote to my friends and fellow riders
I also would not like to see , and do not think all and every trail should be for pedestrians - just because it is not tarmac surfaced
This would be as silly as saying if there is no footpath on the side of a road then there should be no walkers

If I can help I will
Mick

Way OT but I though they replaced the ball on the monument a few years ago, has it been trundled again?

It's not just the signage that's wrong then. Their web site (see my post above) is incorrect.
So what chance have we got to stay legal when the authorities can't get their act together?

And don't forget - just because it's a Restricted Byway doesn't mean it's closed to all traffic. Perhaps your source is confused?

Todays mail/post says

Morning all
Just aquick comment on the unresolved DMMO (Byway) claim...I understand from colleagues in DCC that they have written to the claimants to explain that as a result of the Winchester Case, the claim will not be pursued. Although I have no official notice of this, I think we can assume that the route is a Restricted Byway.
regards
Mike

I would endorse Chris Mitchell’s comments about the official status of this road and also agree with Mike Rhodes’ that the absence of signage for many years has meant the status has depended on hearsay and the locked gates.

My first acquaintance with this route was about 15 years ago, when 4x4 driver friends told me it had a TRO on it. There were no RTA signs to tell motorists this, but the gate at the northern end was locked and at the southern end just out of Baslow there was a gate barricaded with large boulders. So 4x4s were physically blocked from using it but there was a way through for motor-cycles (and horses), hence, I assume they considered it was OK for them to use it.

There are now RB signs at each end, but while there is an unresolved DMMO claim it is understandable that bikers will still consider they are OK using it. The database Chris has mentioned is a combined GLASS/TRF facility, so members of both organisations will know the state of affairs, but still leaves a lot of drivers who don’t know.

Richard Entwistle
