Hi all, I have just bought a new f800gs and am very pleased with it. The manual says I shouldn't charge the battery in circuit except thru the 12v socket as I might damage the electrics. I have a halfords trickle charger which i use on my ktm no probs. Any comments/advice?

cheers,Mark

Comments, yes ...

... the 'brain' on your bike will shut down the socket after 15mins (or so) unless you are using a CanBus specific charger; however if you attach the correct leads directly to the battery you can use your current (!) charger with no problems :thumb

Just fit an extra socket in 'standard' ciggie lighter size, and connect it to the battery terminals direct (via a fuse obviously).

Some make a proper job of it and fit the socket next to the key on the opposite side to the original one. I've been a bit more pikey and just run the wires to the space just in front of the tail-light. Means I have to remove the seat to fish it out for use, but also means it can't be monkeyed with or used without my knowledge to flatten the battery!

AS Oblertone say's - the 12v socket on the key panel is via the CanBus system so only a BMW CanBus charger will work.
However I wired a standard 12v socket direct to the battery via a flying lead so the socket is kept beneath the front l/h fairing panel and I just pull it out when needed and plug the battery charger direct into it, (in fact the bike is in the garage now with the Optimate plugged in). The socket can also be used for a light when I am camping and also I use it to charge my mobile phone when away.
Be sure to include a suitable in-line fuse so that the wiring and socket is suitably protected. Any car accessory shop will sell the socket and in-line fuse for less than a fiver so all you will need is a metre or so of 2c flex.
