Battery Charging

Can you connect a battery charger to the +ive terminal on starter motor and frame to charge the battery on an 1150GS???

Yes, I sometimes use my car charger through the jumpstart post which is attached to that part.

no, you cant, it puts live through the starter doesnt it?,, the live isnt live until the button is pressed, and it connects through the solenoid,,,

The outermost 13mm one is permanently live

If he looked he would see the live terminal attached to the starter goes direct to the battery.

Yes, you can charge the battery direct from the starter motor without any harm whatsoever.

thats why i put a ? mark, i take it its earthed through its casing,? so what stops the motor turning with a live attached permanantly?,,,(never done one,,, presumed it works like a jap un?)

I used to charge through the ciggy socket which is appears to be always live - but the manual of the chargers suggest that it is a bad idea. i bought a ctek charger from nippy normans and they also say shouldn't charge through acc. socket but through their specialist permanent lead. Anyone know what current the acc socket can handle?

Pre engaged starter.
Separate feed causes the solenoid to engage which throws the bendix forward, which connects the +ve to the starter motor.
Until the solenoid is engaged, the +ve terminal is isolated from the motor internally.

That tells you all about the starter solenoid, but it does not mention that some solenoids are an integral part of the starter motor, whereas some are separate..
