At the cookstown 100 road race yesterday and came back to my 04 1200GS and battery dead. Now this had been a problem before but i had got it started at home and all went well. After it was bumped started the indicators didn't work, the brakes servo didn't work, the bike revved of its own accord and generally i only just limped home. What is the problem? is it the battery or has this affected the ecu??? any suggestions please offer up..

Did you have the donor engine running? Also check the charging voltage is within limits. High indicates a fault in the regulator/rectifier.

He says bump started not jump started, so I'm assuming with some help this was a push start with some help.
I had a battery give up once and all kinds of weird stuff happened with the electrics, (suzuki mind you) New battery fitted and everything was fine again, sostart by getting a new battery fitted.

I agree, simple job, fit new fully charged battery, turn on ignition & let the electronics go through their system checks for a few extra seconds, then fire up off the button..

If you have the battery disconnected don't you also have to fully open and close the throttle to calibrate it before switching on?

Yup, you're correct - switch on the ignition but do not start the bike. Fully open and close the throttle twice to reset the TPS's.

To the OP, a new/fully charged battery should sort your issues and hats off to you fo being able to bump the bike with a dead battery, that's not an easy thing to do in the least!

phew

thank goodness for the Forum, in the olden days i had my Guzzi jump started by RAC, it went hay wire, clocks, fuel injection etc
resolved by a specialist asking £750 for a ECU replacement which i belive was not brand new !! live & learn :rob

If you have a Gell battery I've found these to be funny things when subject to deep discharge
It seems to take a lot of charging to get them going from dead, I suspect that the battery is taking so much effort to get going in starving the ECU and everything else.
I would try just giving a good healthy trickle charge for 24 hours or so.

Lead acids wont accept a charge if they are discharged below (something like) 9V no load. An Optimate will hit it with a high voltage (+20V maybe) to wake up the plates and then trickle charge it. If its on charge for at least a day before the light goes green then its probably be fine for a long time yet. If the status goes green after a few hours its probably shot. BTW unless you need the deep discharge ability, a Motobatt is better value than Odyssey.

I once recovered a totally flat gel cell with an Optimate and used it to start the lawn mower for a year after that.

I'm amazed you managed to bump start a GS

After hydraulic locking my 1150 and drawing the battery emptying the water out I managed to bump start it on a damp dirt track in the woods...

So it can be done although it's rather like making love to a beautiful woman, you have to be coordinated and have sensitivity in your actions

Although having
three boys pushing and a big fat arse
is another technique
