Hi all, I recently replaced my battery for the first time at 50,000 miles. I drive my GS 1150 (2002) model 60 kms each day. At the bikes last major service (30,000 miles) the bike shop said they had replaced the Poly-V belt. Do people think that the belt needs changing again or do ye think that there is a drain on the battery when I'm not using it.
I charge the battery about once every week at the moment, to be certain it will start. Also I have to check the valve clearances.....any special tools needed for either job.
Thanks for any replies

BWM say replace the belt at 36K miles, not 30K and i remember changing mine at 42K miles and it is good to use as spare.
With the miles you do,you shouldnt need to charge the battery at all.
Can you check the voltage at the battery with the motor running.
Should be 13.5V ish.It may be worth taking the drive belt off and checking the alternator turns freely and then refitting belt to correct tension.
For valve clearances, you dont need "special" tools, but do a search for Steptoes rocker endfloat adjustment.
Do that before you check valve clearances, and the TB balance after, and the motor will be sweet.

Was the battery replaced with a good quality one, or a cheapie? These bikes are hard on batteries at start up, so they give cheap batteries a hard time. If there is a drain on the battery, it shouldn't be too hard to trace.
If you are still concerned about battery condition, use an optimate type charger, and plug it in when you aren't using the bike.

Thursday I'm off so I'll give it a go. Thanks for the reply. The battery cost me about eighty euro so I don't think its a bad one. I hope it's just the belt thats causing the problem!

The only problem that a belt causes is if it snaps.

And you'd know if it snapped because your alternator/charge warning light would be permanently on.
