The OEM HP2E battery is know to be a weak link and mine is already getting tired and less that 500km on the bike! While I could just get the same size again what are the other options? Will the ADV battery fit? I know one can fit an Odyssey - what size? Other affordable options? looking at the battery cradle space it has two 'wings' on either side witha space before the battery? - there is a spacer lug that positions the OEM battery. Can one get a battery that takes up this whole space and has more craking power - yes I know it will be heavier but more reliable is what I want!

Most info on the battery options on this thread Dom.

I went for the odyssey and a bitch to install :blast The OEM was just to risky if you don't use the bike every day and I was surprised it lasted the two years before I changed it. It is now living happily every after in a Suzuki Bandit....:augie

Thanks found that thread and looks like the PC 545 is the way to go - only problem is foooking expensive here (well actually about the same as a BMW OEM here!) - three times what an Exide ETZ12BS would cost me but also do not want to be left with my finger up my proverbial nought somewhere in the Karoo! (Did you fit the 545 or 535?)

Agents telling me here I can also use a Genesis battery - same company that makes the Odyssey and spec wise very comparable. Anyone used one?

I had mine replaced with the upgraded BMW one under warranty a few months ago

hp2 battery

When I finally needed a new battery I put in a yuasa ytz14s. My bike had a ytz12s stock. I puchased the bike new and had very few problems with the battery. I actually have the motocross brand from yuasa, a sub brand. It is super easy to install and has more power then the stocker. Over three years out of the stock battery and 25,000 miles. Richard

I have had the PC 545 in now for almost 2 years.
It has never missed a heartbeat and Ive never had a flat since.
Prior to the change the OEM battery was replaced 3 times.

Go the PC 545, its the biggest that can possibly fit and no maintenance problems.

I think it was the 545 and a VERY snug fit :beerjug: So far no problems and it seems to turn over much easier than before :thumb2

Yep. Over 2 years with 545.

Not even had to think about it since installed.

HP2 battery replacement

Having read all the above re a replacment battery would it be fair to say that the PC 545 is the one to fit in my HP2e ?
Thanks Ping :clap

Another vote for the 545 from me :thumb2

One thing to bear in mind with the HP - when it gets hot, there isn't enough juice to start it due to the increased pressure from the overheating oil... but it will feel like the battery is dead when you push the starter button. Just give it 15/20 min to cool down and all is well with the world again ;)

Only on the trail - once trying to get out of a steep meadow that had that really long grass making it a bitch to make any progress. It was also pretty hot that day too.

I also experienced it with another HP2 rider at the Ryedale - after a particularly tough special stage, Bam Bam's bike (I think it was him!) wouldn't start. He thought it was a flat battery but by the time I joined him, after it had had time to cool down, it started fine.

I've never had the bike that hot on the road :thumb

PS: Belated happy birthday chap :thumb

Yep it was me :blast Dropped the bike 6 or 7 times is a bad section, bike very hot, would not start,3/4 hour later it fired up as normal and off I rode.

I have heard another explanation, that is the gel bat regenerates when standing after trying to start it .:nenau This has happened before on a cold morning when leaving home to go to BMW dealer to have the heated grips turned on. Bike did not fire on first couple of cranks and played dead! Rang BMW was told to leave it for ten mins and try again, fired straight up :blagblah PS it's on its 3rd bat last being the BM upgrade

Interesting read, small things like this always good to know should I get in the situation with a overheated bike :D

Thanks for the b'day wishes, need to do a "curious case of benjamin button" now :blast :rob:beerjug:

Here's a thought, if the oil is creating that much pressure when hot, why does the oil not blow all the seals out when you try to start the bike with the upgraded battery?

Because the battery simply isn't strong enough? :nenau

To be honest, I'd rather it didn't blow the seals! :blast

My first battery failed fairly soon from new and was replaced under warrenty. After three years having to suffer the consequences of having the OEM ETZ12-BS (bullshite) battery installed (optimate every few days to top up), I tried to start the bike at the weekend. Nadda, click, click, clickety click.

Now I'm not prepared to faf about tying to shoe horn some non standard size battery like the ODYSSEY PC-535 or 545. So I fitted a genuine Yuasa YTZ14S which is exactly the same size as the OEM and so far seems to make a considerable difference in starting, the OEM battery was always reluctant, even when new.

So thumbs up for the Yuasa, only time will tell if I should have tried the ODYSSEY.
