I've finally took the plunge and ordered a BB chip from Motorworks. Will the chip make any significant difference to my bike (1100) or will I only see a difference when I fit another exhaust?

Chips usually richen the mixture. It'll give little more power, but does tend to improve drivability.

Check your fuel comsumption before/after.

Rob,

Good news, if you've ordered the new chip from Motoworks then it will make a difference, with or without a new can.

The Bb Chip comes with 8 map settings , catering for most set-up's from standard can with Cat and collector box to a race silencer and no cat to a fully spec'd race bike. You just set it up to suit your bikes configuration.

I've got it on my 1100GS.(no cat and race can)

If you've got any questions give me a bell on 01984 624823.

A full diagramatic instruction sheet and a installation guide can be found on my website under 2ridetheworld.com "bike Mods".

Good luck and enjoy.

Cheers

Well the chip has finally arrived! I dashed out and fitted it, took about twenty mins, I was suprised how easy it was I didn't even need to remove the coding plug.

First impressions are a little disapointing. The bike feels like it has more umph above 5k but it now surges slightly at 2k, I've balanced the throttle bodies but it's made no difference, The top end is the same at 122Mph on my computer (130ish on the GS speedo).

I think £215 is a bit steep for what it does but hopefully when I get the Remus fitted it will make a significant difference.

I hope it does make a difference when you fit the can.

I'd feel a bit miffed if I'd spent that kinda dosh without a kick in the pants that I could tell was different from the wifes' after a night on the town !

Anyone tried the Techlusion jobbie yet. I was shown the article at the NEC and the blurb was interesting. Supposed to eradicate surging and can be tuned to specific systems! No major surgery, just a tap into the wiring.

Techlusion

I fitted the TFI box about a month ago, good value compared to chips etc. and feels much smoother.

CO readout improved and pulls in 5 or 6 much better.

Top end plus 3.5 bhp with standard can. Have since fitted Sebring Twister, but have yet to get re-dynoed.

Overall a much smoother ride and recommended.

cheers

Typically I have now changed my earlier first opinion of the new BB Chip. The chip and I are now friends again!

I decided to give the bike a good run. The surging at 2k was down to the air screws needing adjustment to match the new ignition map. The bike is now back to its former non surging state. I blatted up to Sheffield to get a feel for roll on acceleration under normal riding conditions and it is defiantly much quicker especially above 5k. I filled the tank before setting off; the fuel light came on at 168 Miles which is a significant raise in fuel consumption I would normally be able to do 200 to 205 miles, however, I was giving it big handfuls to tryout the acceleration and sitting at higher speeds than I normally would so time will tell on this one.

Hi,

I've just fitted a Remus race can and B&B chip to my R850GS. I fitted the can first, then the chip. Can only sounded much better, but the chip smoothed everything out. Like you say, fitting the chip is easy, but the instructions aren't clear on what stages 1, 2 and 3 actually mean. I contacted Motorworks about this. The gut there reckoned I should configure it as stage 3, which I find surprising as the only difference from standard is the race can and straight through link pipe.

I was surprised to find that the bike, bought new in 2000, did not have a cat (good) and that there was nothing in the slot for the Motronic ie the brown relay.

Does anyone know what the story is re how to configure according to what has been done to the engine???

Finally, has anyone the foggiest idea what the f**k the immortal sentence "Checken it air intake and air cleaner on free artificial respiration of the patient" means. Who is the patient, the bike or me??

Cheers

It sounds like the Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show.

Theres a good line in the 1100 install guide; "The silicone seal sticks often very strongly, one levers best with putty, sturdy meter or the like"???

I think yours means check to see if the air filter and air inlet are free flowing.

Maybe we ought to ask Liv from Norway for a translation :D

Oh, right.....

By the way, the instructions also mention cutting off the air cleaner hose/trumpet whotsit just behind the lip ie the bit that is not visible, cos it's in the airbox. Has anyone done this? Apparently you're only supposed to do this on the right hand side one, otherwise you get all top-end power and lose the mid-range. I haven't bothered as I don't want to perform any surgery that I can't reverse.

:)

There is no mention of cutting any pipes in my instructions (a single sheet of A4)

The 1100's inlet pipe only has enough plastic inside the airbox to hold it in place, is the 850's more substantial? I'm quite intrigued as to what improvements can be made by modifying the inlet ducts on the bike...Boxer design claim up to 7 BHP with ther kit http://www.boxer-design.de/en/Leistungskitee.htm

Just reading my instructions again...I see what you mean about the stages, I have 3 stage 1's, 2 stage 2's, 2 stage 3's and 1 stage 4, but no explanation of what a stage is.

since my bike is standard, apart from the chip, I have set my coding plug to stage 1 without catalytic converter, which means pins 87a & 30 are shorted. My coding plug is Ivory, which has these pins shorted anyway so I just left it in.

That's weird. My instructions are 4 sides of A4, headed "Tune-Up Eprom Notes BMW Motronik MA 2.2 R850 R, GS". It has 8 programs: standard and stages 1,2 & 3 for cat and non-cat. Like I said, with a Remus Viper race can Motorworks (having consulted a manual) reckoned it should be stage 3). It certainly runs much better than standard, but what would be stages 1 and 2 I wonder???

My bike (new when I bought it) does not have a motronic code plug of any colour. I don't know why not, unless it's because it doesn't have a cat.

Re the air funnels, the instructions say "Modify now at last the right air funnel, only the one on the right side. This is very important for more torque and power. If you (sic) looking for the highest peak power, you may cut both funnels, but you get a dip in torque at 4,000rpm". It goes on to say "These made the resonance asymetric. You will find these asymetric funnels by most of modern engines today. eg Honda VTR 1,000". What they mean (I think) is that you should only cut the rhs trumpet. Motorworks reckon you shouldn't bother unless you are racing as there's a loss of mid-range. So I haven't touched mine. I've never looked to see how much protudes into the airbox.

It's all a bit of a mystery to me.......

Bullcroft.

I have the answers...:D

Log onto my website at- http://www.2ridetheworld.com then click on the Bike Mods link on the right. On the appearing page you see BBpower chip and full instruction in English. The instructions and advice are my own after completing the mod. There are also full diagramtic instructions relating to the wiring of the electrical spade connectors:D

Failing that, give me a call on : 07980 612275 and I'll go through it with you.

Hope this helps

Simon,

Nice site!

The instructions I got for my BBChip made no mention of cutting the right inlet tube, I only had a single A4 instruction sheet with my chip, did your chip come with these instructions? have I got some information missing?

Cheers

Rob

Gerry, You said that you fitted a TFI box could you give some more info on it as I am not aware of this mod the cost & who supplies it does it do a better job than the BB chip ?
Thanks

Rob,

the instructions re cutting the inlet pipe came with the chip. I was pretty nervous about this step. I ended up talking to the chip manufacturers and Bracken. Based on advice I went ahead. By cutting the pipe you effectively improve the manner and direction the air hit's the engine. You dont get inproved speed, simply extra "grunt", especially mid range.

Thanks for your kind words about my site.

Cheers & have a great 2003

Simon T.

Thanks for the info (and what a brilliant site!). The instructions I got were ok for installing the chip - I did exactly what you said. The 'missing link' was simply that they did not explain what stage tuning was required according to what has been done to the engine, what fuel is being used etc. Your information clearly shows that, so cheers! As it happens, stage 3 is right for mine ( and I understand that you can't damage the engine by setting the wrong stage anyway). On a related point, my 2000 bike does not have a cat, nor was a Motronic coding plug of any sort fitted - is this normal?

Cheers

Bullcroft,

having no cat is unusual, as German legislation is pretty tight about this? The cat is housed in the collector box (big oddly shaped lump of metal which sits under the engine and connects the header pipes to your silencer) are you sure your bike hasn't got a cat? Sorry if this question is a bit silly, but I dont know how familiar you are with the GS. Again not having a coding plug I think is a little unusal. Did you buy the bike new? If so, I'd call the dealer and ask him specifically why your bike was supplied as it was.

Cheers
