Hi peeps! First time poster loving his ex-Brecon 650GS whilst the R1150R takes a winter break! So the girlfriend wants to buy a GPS for her car and I manage to talk her into getting one that we can use on the bikes too. Within her price range we're set to get a Quest when the salesman throws a spanner in the works and gives us a leaflet for the Becker Traffic Assist 7914. Aparantly Becker GPS are used in 'top' Mercs and Porsches and this new, out this week (not on their website www.becker.de), 7914 can be used for cars, bikes, walking etc. He says it will be in the same price range as the Quest and that he'll have one to view this coming weekend. Before she falls for his sales pitch I was wondering if anyone out there has any knowledge or info of Becker, and hopefully this particular product, and could shed some light our way? The specs look good.

*nods* whilst the Quest advertises it's marine capability, this one doesn't. I'm also wondering how readily available bike mounting kit will be. :nenau

An advantage of the TomTom is that you can pick up a free, monthly updated, overlay of speed camera locations.

I've been using an original TomTom Go on the bike and in the cage. It's not waterproof, but nothing that a freezer bag and a plastic clip won't solve.

Having looked at this unit more closely, as I thought, Becker use a mount from Herbert Richter (hr-autocomfort.de). The rear casing has only a slot (they call a ratchet) to slide-n-lock, the unit in and out, this attaches to the mount by means of an adaptor plate which has 4 cut out (ratchet prong type) slots which locate and lock. I can see no way of removing this adaptor plate without causing damage, though looks as its in 2 mated parts.

HR do make other adaptor plates but I do not see a ratchet prong with either 2 or 4 screw holes version which is the only way I could see you getting get this mounted onto a GS.

Becker is part of a large German audio group (includes Harman-Kardon, JBL) and have an excellent reputation for combining hifi and satnav in a single head unit. My wife has a Mercedes-badged version of a Becker unit in her Merc. So good company, but don't know anything about the particular unit you mention.

Thanks peeps! Some useful stuff there. I suspect if she likes it she'll get one anyhow for her car... and i'll be left using a map! I've read with interest the fors and against for the Quest and 2610 on here and may be swayed to go all 21st century in the new year!! :thumb

In case you were wondering...

... the Becker turned out to be pants. The salesman in question had been playing with it for the week in his cage and had nothing but problems. He thinks they've rushed it out to compete with a new indigo somethingorother. Anyhoo, the girlfriend went for a Garmin Nuvi which, although it is a cage only GPS is very, very impressive.

I read your post re- the tom tom with interest
I am about to buy a unit for my car, tom tom seems to do the job, nice and simple, just like me.
But I would, on the odd occasion like to put on the bike as well, as I cannot afford to have 2 units, RAM do a mounting kit.
But until yourself I have not come across anyone who has done it, or owned up to doing it, as all the GPS threads seem very biased towards ‘bike only’ units.
My thoughts were that as long as you are aware of the limitations, i.e. not waterproof, everything else should be fine?
Is that your experience?

Thanks

The mouting of *TT Go* onto a bike has been done several times using the RAM-B-202-TO1 (http://www.ram-mount-uk.com/ram-b-202-u-to1.htm) which has a cup bracket with 1" ball set and it forms a hybrid of the TT connector casing and replaces the TT windscreen sucker.
