Some interesting places there - its given me some inspiration for a route back from Switzerland next July. Ghent looks well worth a visit (went to Zeebrugge in May)

Gent is very nice

I must visit zeebrugge it looks good a must for a future trip I also like the look of the Ardennes..... to many places not enough time

I must admit I did not put a lot of thought into Mannheim, it was just on the route at a time to stop for a bed and a good meal with some nice beer of course was all that was wanted before passing through.

Was not staying long enough to enjoy to much mind you less than 12 miles down the road Heidelberg looks nice.

erm I do not know at a guess its a distraction with lots of interesting old vehicles google streel view shows this

I was actually going to mention Heidelberg in my post. It's a cracking place. As is the likes of Bacharach am Rhein if you want somewhere smaller and quieter. But much much nicer than Mannheim

Edit: Bacharach might have been slightly too far north for your needs. But Bad Dürkheim and Deidesheim are in your area
