Hi All,

I just bought a 1990 80GS, which is very rare in Israel. I bought it cheap but with a bent frame - the front wheel is about 2 inches offset from the line of the bike.
Legaly I can only switch frames through the BMW importer: this will cost about 1500 pounds and is out of the question.

I know one can get used frames in England, but this is ilegal in Israel.

Anyone has any experience straightening BMW frames? what should I be watching for? Is it possible to get a used frame with my chasis numbers on it?

Thanks in advance,
Miky Heimann

Mikyh, I think the only answer for you is to find a workshop that has frame straightening facilities.

I would assume that that kind of facility is rare in your country as it is rare in my country (Australia).

2" is a real alignment problem and would make for interesting steering.

There are various ways to skin a cat as they say. I sold my tired R100CS with 305,000 kilometres on the clock to an Irishman who had landed in this country with a bike that he couldn't register as he didn't have an Australian compliance plate.

He just happened to have a R100CS as well in near new nick. I also believe that he had an angle grinder and a set of steel numbering dies that only required a piece of flat clean metal so that he could write his name on the bike.

I trashed my '91 R80GS and had it reframed onto a brand new frame imported for me by Motorworks. The price of the frame was £700 incl VAT & delivery here in the UK. Why not call them & see what the cost would be to ship one to you. It will be a very simple job to swap everything across (including the VIN plate).

Frame Straightening

Miky, one thing to watch out for if you're getting the frame straightened on a hydraulic jig. On my R100 the stearing lock protruded into the stearing head tube, the bar on the jig needs to fit in this tube exactly and therefore should have a channel machined in it to get round the lock. If you try to use a smaller bar you will end up with oval bearing seats, and a useless frame. (I now this from experience!)
